12 Next Level Science Desk Toys/Gadgets!

Hi Everyone 🙂
Welcome back!

I get asked often: “Where did you get all this stuff?” My goal is to share the real magic of science and physics- and to this end I will update here (and in my store) suggestions on where to get some of these toys, kinetic art pieces, and scientific curiosities for yourself.

This video contains :

0:03 The HoverPen: A sleek writing pen trapped against gravity- at an elegant angle- by a magnetic field via precision engineered placement of neodymium magnets in the base. Get this 2D magnetic trap from @thehoverpen on KickStarter now.

0:39 Vsauce Mirror Anamorphosis: the warped printed image is restored only with a mirror in the form of cylinder- when placed carefully in the center of the image, Kevin, Michael, and Jake appear in their true form.

1:25 Mirror Anamorphosis: this vintage card from 1984 contains a cylindrical mirror anamorphic image. Lady Liberty is revealed by bending the flexible Mylar mirror in to a half cylinder. The math describing this mapping is quite complex and was given in detail in a physics journal in 2000.

2:01 Fog Globe: an ideal souvenir for a San Francisco winter- snow is very rare (1976 recoded one inch downtown) but prolonged fog marks the winter season. The “fog” in this globe consists of small glitter particles of uniform density that can be agitated into temporary suspension and then allowed to settle on the bottom giving the impression of dissipating fog.

2:44 Novatrope: this electro-kinetic sculpture uses strobing LEDs to animate a fractal inspired spiral geometry- similar to a 3D zoetrope. Each Novatrope comes with multiple 3D printed translucent sculptures, each based on phyllotactic spirals such as the well known Fibonacci curve, each producing its own interesting shape and perceived motion- as seen in this compilation.

3:35 Equilibrium Puzzle Mobile: delicate balance and correct assemble sequence is the key. My favorite puzzles are the ones that involve physics in the solution.

3:55 Equilateral Triangular Kaleidoscope: three mirrors arranged in a 60-60-60 degree triangle creates the appearance of a plane filled with triangles (or equivalently a honeycomb lattice)- perhaps the most common mirror configuration design, this inexpensive kaleidoscope produces an excellent example of the reflection pattern. As a bonus the exterior tube on this scope incorporates a kinetic Moirè pattern.

4:41 Polarized Light Cell Kaleidoscope: the amazing colors you see from the object cell of this 3 mirror kaleidoscope are generated by manipulating the polarization of light- the object in the clear wand is a strip of clear cellophane in oil which has the property of optical rotation. This property allows for an incredible range of color formation when placed between two linear polarization filters. A creation of kaleidoscope artist Ron Kuhns.

5:59 Tensegrity Table: A wonderful three string version of the suspension equilibrium table. The LUNA tensegrity stand is 3D printed and then painted by hand, with designer Anthony Yap incorporating a celestial moon phase motif to nice effect, and clear nylon fishing line for an almost invisible means of support.

6:30 Tapered Mirrors Kaleidoscope: the design of this teleidoscope uses three mirrors to create an image of a geodesic sphere. A blue laser pointer reveals some of the complexity of the repeated reflections. Three mirrors in an equilateral triangle configuration will produce a plane of tiled triangles, but if they are tapered the repeated reflections curve to infinity creating the sphere.

    is a symmetrical word

  2. Darth Stigater on May 12, 2022 at 1:15 pm

TOMATO is spelled with all symmetrical letters while GREEN is spelled with all asymmetrical letters.

  3. tiny otter on May 12, 2022 at 1:17 pm

Well I think that TOMATO is the same even if you flip it is it not?

  4. Николай Золотых on May 12, 2022 at 1:17 pm

    Какой то бред.
    Первый раз калейдоскоп увидел???

  5. Lenin Kshetriya on May 12, 2022 at 1:17 pm

GREEN mirror image look affected while TOMATO mirror image is same as OTAMOT in horrintal and same as TOMATO in vertical so it looks unaffected eg: TOYOTA

  6. ArfurFaulkesHake on May 12, 2022 at 1:18 pm

I like the idea of fooling people by comparing the mirror image of a an asymetricly lettered word with a symetricaly lettered one.

    Psych!

  7. Pechingo on May 12, 2022 at 1:20 pm

for the brain teaser it is because in the word tomato all the letters are symmetrical

  8. Kanishk Jain on May 12, 2022 at 1:20 pm

TOMATO is symmetric about y-axis, it’s also flipped but doesn’t look like

  9. Steven Bridge on May 12, 2022 at 1:24 pm

"TOMATO" has bilateral symmetry so does not appear to change.

  10. Fen Klasörü on May 12, 2022 at 1:25 pm

Flip of tomato is same 🤗

  13. P_Fiction on May 12, 2022 at 1:28 pm

The letters in tomato are symmetrical where as they are not in green….so even though you can’t tell, they both flip

  14. Gavin on May 12, 2022 at 1:29 pm

    These are awesome

  15. Dori Ownbey on May 12, 2022 at 1:31 pm

All the letters in TOMATO are symmetrical.

  16. Ashish Roy on May 12, 2022 at 1:31 pm

    tomato was d same

  20. ⚡UNKNOWN⚡ on May 12, 2022 at 1:36 pm

Agar ham TOMATO ko flip kare ge to bhi wo TOMATO hi rahe ga isiliye Tomato flip karne par bhi vaisa hi dikh raha tha

    Hello everyone 🙂
    Where are you from 🌍?

  22. allstar watt on May 12, 2022 at 1:39 pm

All of the letters in the word TOMATO are symmetrical so they look the same as a reflection.

  23. Moinuddin Ahmed on May 12, 2022 at 1:39 pm

The colour does not matter but 180° flipping of TOMATO will be TOMATO only. This is the reason words appear flipped on buses in front because it’s 180° flip for us being in front there’s nothing wrong done by the mirrors. A person coming from North if has to turn right means he wants to go towards West and if he would have been travelling from South then he definitely wants to go towards East.

  24. Grey Fire on May 12, 2022 at 1:41 pm

    Tomato also flipped
But letters in "tomato" is double side letter .

  25. Anthony Kneip III on May 12, 2022 at 1:43 pm

This video was great! My favorite was the table supported by suspension. Almost like the three strings were holding it up!

As for the puzzle at the end, I think it has to do with symmetry. The word “tomato” had reflexive symmetry on a vertical axis, whereas the word “green” does not. In a way, it’s like the word tomato was its own palindrome in a vertical sense. The color of the two words was pointless.

  28. family use on May 12, 2022 at 1:46 pm

Each letter in TOMATO are symmetrical

  29. Fen Klasörü on May 12, 2022 at 1:47 pm
  30. KusL Mathuria on May 12, 2022 at 1:48 pm

8:45 because letters in tomato are symmatrical

  31. Farooque Gamings on May 12, 2022 at 1:49 pm

TOMATO was symmetrical the whole time

    😲😲😲

  32. le Moko Lyon on May 12, 2022 at 1:49 pm

Anamorphose cylindrique. Je crois que le premier exemple de ce procédé sur une pochette de disque, c’est ”No earthly connection” de Rick Wakeman, (en 1974?)

  33. Guillaume Lau on May 12, 2022 at 1:53 pm

    Where does it jump???

  34. Nathan on May 12, 2022 at 1:55 pm

GREEN is asymmetrical while the word TOMATO is symmetical

  35. Khymæra on May 12, 2022 at 1:56 pm

all the letter in TOMATO are visually identical in reflection where as the letter in GREEN are not.

  36. STUDENT SUCCESS POINT on May 12, 2022 at 1:57 pm

    Nice

  37. Shlok Kumar on May 12, 2022 at 1:59 pm

    Tomato is also flipped

  38. Markus Preckl on May 12, 2022 at 1:59 pm

Well. T,O,M,A(,T,O) are letters with a vertical symmetry axis, whereas the letters G,R,E(,E),N have no vertical symmetry axis.

  39. Grace Joyner on May 12, 2022 at 1:59 pm

I think that TOMATO is actually flipped as well however it is symmetrical when in all caps and vertical so you cant tell

  40. AsᴀD CʜOʜᴀN on May 12, 2022 at 2:01 pm

Unsubscribe you just because you repeat same stuff all the time.

  41. Lucassism on May 12, 2022 at 2:05 pm

as for the quiz, it’s not even a trick with physics, it’s with letters. The letters in TOMATO are all symmetrical, and none of the ones in GREEN are.

  42. Design Wux on May 12, 2022 at 2:05 pm

Its shape of the letters…. nothing with color or light..

  43. Jessica Sayer on May 12, 2022 at 2:06 pm

Hey could anyone reply with a link to where I could buy the kaleidoscope (the time it appears in the video is 6:30)?

  44. Cherry's Bear on May 12, 2022 at 2:09 pm

Tomato is also flip… But every spelling in tomato is symmetrical 😌😉

  45. #COOLBROSPLAYEZ on May 12, 2022 at 2:09 pm

tomato if flipped backward still looks like tomato

  46. Steve Cox on May 12, 2022 at 2:10 pm

More pointless garbage for a dying planet.

  47. Ultralagger R.E.V on May 12, 2022 at 2:10 pm

That hoverpen… you got my money

  48. Kashif Muhammad on May 12, 2022 at 2:10 pm

all words written in TOMATO spell the same even when a mirror image is made

  49. Sskkmm 090 on May 12, 2022 at 2:11 pm

    I like it very much
