5 Dangerous Everyday Household Items!

A home should be a place of safety & comfort.

However accidents can and do happen, often caused by a household item you didn’t realize could be dangerous.

In this list we’ll be showing you 5 dangerous everyday household items.

5) Ionization Smoke Detectors

Although they save thousands of lives every year and every household should have one, smoke detectors do carry a little risk.

Inside a smoke detector is a radioactive material called Americium-241 which ionizes the air around it and should smoke come into contact with the air it sounds the alarm.

Americium-241 emits alpha particles and low energy gamma rays.

This means they are completely safe stuck to the ceiling, however should one ever take apart a smoke detector and come into contact with the radioactive material, the danger does increase.

Nothing realistically will happen right away as the amount is so tiny but it can still manifest into cancer.

There is a lot of debate and research into the topic, some researchers say they don’t pose a big threat even if touched, other researchers say one should never touch the radioactive material.

Your best bet is to stick to the safe side and never open up and take apart a smoke detector.

4) Thermometers & Some Light Bulbs

If you have an old school thermometer that isn’t digital it most likely will contain mercury.

Light bulbs such as fluorescent or some energy saving light bulbs also contain mercury.

Mercury is a metal that’s in liquid form at room temperature.

It is also very poisonous.

So should you break something that contains mercury and it comes spilling out you need to be very careful when cleaning it up.

Direct contact is highly advised against, but Mercury also vaporizes in the air.

This means breathing in the fumes can lead to some serious consequences.

Although only small amounts are found in thermometers and light bulbs, it can still pack a punch if handled incorrectly.

Always wear gloves, ventilate the room, and if possible wear a mask when cleaning up.

If you do inhale the fumes you can expect chest pains, shaking, twitches, difficulty breathing, and even coughing up blood.

3) Gas Powered Appliances

Gas powered appliances can be very dangerous and deadly without you even knowing.

The problem comes in the form an odorless gas called carbon monoxide.

If a gas powered appliances is defective it can release carbon monoxide which is very deadly.

The worst part is you won’t even realize your breathing in the deadly gas as it has no smell.

However there are a few warning symptoms such as headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion.

If one doesn’t get into fresh air soon, they will die.

Luckily carbon monoxide detectors are cheap and very effective, we highly recommend every household that uses gas in any way, has a carbon monoxide detector near a gas appliance.

2) Household Cleaners

Household cleaners contain a cocktail of dangerous chemicals.

For example most oven cleaners contain corrosive alkalis which can effect your gastrointestinal track and respiratory system if inhaled or ingested.

Furniture polishes contain chemicals that can be absorbed into your skin and cause cancer.

Toilet bowl cleaners contain such corrosive chemicals they can even cause burns on your skin and eyes.

Essentially always wear gloves when using these chemicals and keep them out of reach of children and everything will be fine.

1) Extension Cords

While an extension cord itself isn’t dangerous, the way they are commonly used are.

They are the leading cause of house fires in the U.S.

Many people don’t realize there is a voltage capacity and plug in as much as they can.

Plus they are usually found on the floor, under furniture and on carpets.

Some go as far as plugging in cheaply made electronics that don’t adhere to safety regulations and leaving them unattended.

All this together is a huge fire hazard.

The best solution is to just be sensible with how much you plug in and never buy cheap, badly built electronics that aren’t regulated.

The recent increase in e-cigarettes exploding is a perfect example, since it’s a market that’s blowing up some dodgy manufactures are trying to produce products as cheaply as possible just to make more profit.

A stick is dangerous if used incorrectly… Guns, the things that keep the corrupt federal governmental agencies at bay, America free, safe and feared can be used for propaganda and be considered dangerous if misused….. anything used wrong can be dangerous….

In the US, gasses used for appliances (either methane or propane) has an oderant added to it giving a distinctive smell, thus warning of a leak.

  12. Neil Brookins on October 14, 2021 at 5:26 pm

5- the best way to protect against Americium in your smoke detectors is to buy photoelectric detectors and throw out the ionization detectors. Photoelectric detectors don’t have any radioactive material.

4- buying led lights instead of cfl means you have no mercury in the bulbs.

3- the best way to know you have carbon monoxide poisoning is that your carbon monoxide alarm is sounding beep beep beep beep. Don’t place it close to the appliance as this video suggests because it will lead to false alarms.

1- a high quality extension cord will have a circuit breaker to cut power if it’s overloaded. Don’t buy cheap ones without this protection.

The next most dangerous household item is anti static brushes

  18. Tommy_the_4th_of_july_king 1 on October 14, 2021 at 5:35 pm

Because of the low penetration of alpha radiation, americium-241 only poses a health risk when ingested or inhaled.

  19. Seth Horst on October 14, 2021 at 5:35 pm

My PC is plugged into an extension cord now, and nothing bad has never happened.

  20. George Jacob. 29 on October 14, 2021 at 5:36 pm

Americium is not very dangerous even though it is radio…..

  21. Zenthros Rion on October 14, 2021 at 5:37 pm

None of these items are dangerous even remotely, as long as you don’t try to set your gas powered stuff on fire, try to eat a thermometer or cleaning appliances, shove your extension cord into a toaster then you are fine

Now for the ionization smoke detector, you are just plain fucking wrong, there is literally no fucking danger at all, it has less than 1/5th of a microgram of americium, which is already low level radioactivity and can’t do any harm, let along penetrate even a centimeter of air. EVEN IF YOU EAT IT THERE WILL BE NO CONSEQUENCES!!! The radioactivity is so low that it cannot hurt you for the short amount of time it is in your body.

  22. karen l Smith on October 14, 2021 at 5:39 pm

The smoke detectors are much more dangerous when they get old. I don’t know what "old" is.

  23. Maximo on October 14, 2021 at 5:39 pm

    5. Smoke detectors release very little radiation. No harm there

Was this guys just born? Carbon Monoxide has a powerful smell that is added to the gas by the provider so you would know you have a leak.

  35. The Proper Communist on October 14, 2021 at 5:50 pm

Mercury is not dangerous if you tuch it unless you have cuts on your hands. It is the vapours you breathe in that cause mercury poisoning

  36. Different Wavelength on October 14, 2021 at 5:51 pm

Ionising smoke detectors were installed my apartment, one directly above my sofa near my bed. I started having insomnia and head aches develop over time since the installation. Before this when there was only regular smoke detectors I didn’t experience these issues.

I’ve collected over 30 1microcurie older samples of Americium 241. I have a death wish due to my strong desire to die cuz life sucks. it’s already affected my thyroid & caused me to stink a severe sour smell. I hope sooner than later I develop cancer but who knows I’m probably immortal

  42. Grimdeed1917 on October 14, 2021 at 6:01 pm

In the Netherlands we just add a smell to carbon monoxide

  43. NaqiTheGoat on October 14, 2021 at 6:02 pm

smoke detectors use alpha wave radiation, so it can’t do shit to you unless you fucking inject it inside of yourself AND I DOUBT ANY HUMAN WOULD INJECT AMERICIUM INSIDE THEM, direct contact with mercury cant do shit, but if you inhale it you’re quite fucked, carbon monoxide detectors exist so no big deal there, you can just wear safety for household cleaners, there are something called breakers

  44. The Nightmare Before you on October 14, 2021 at 6:03 pm

On the extension cord I just buy the ones that only have one plug just for that reason. If it’s not there then you can’t plug in more then there sld be.

  45. Sprsae on October 14, 2021 at 6:07 pm

The americium is completely safe (until you eat it, shove it up where the sun dosnt shine..)

  46. Lebiwan96 on October 14, 2021 at 6:09 pm

Fuck off you grubby yob why don’t you do a top 5 on ways to push your nan down the stairs

  47. paul maans on October 14, 2021 at 6:13 pm

Added note. The Americium in the smoke detector is embedded in gold. Hope no one tries to separate it out from the radioactive source. It can’t be separated and radioactive gold isn’t something that should be in your jewelry

  48. Daniel Lau on October 14, 2021 at 6:14 pm

If u break the thermometer, you need to pour sulphur on it to form another non toxic material.

  49. Emin Marookian on October 14, 2021 at 6:15 pm

SMOKE DETECTORS ARE NOT DANGEROUS. PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE WORD RADIATION DOESN’T MEAN BAD THINGS
