As an electrician I have quite a few meters; I’ve found Fluke hard to beat especially with regard to their non-contact volt probe. I keep some cheap ones on hand, new in the packaging, from say HF to give to a friend or family member when they ask to borrow a meter. A little knowledge can get you in trouble and it’s easy to fry a meter or yourself if used incorrectly so I’m not loaning a $500 meter to someone to just get a sorry about that back. You can get some decent budget meters from Klein, Ideal, and AmpProbe that hold up quite well and don’t break the bank. When measuring most things today a True RMS meter is a must and with electrical work a clamp amp meter is a good thing to have. With clamp meters $100 should really be your starting point, and as you go up so do the features like also measuring DC amps. You should be looking at Cat3 and Cat4 levels the higher the level and volt rating typically signified a better built or better insulated/protected meter.

I am an Electrition in the UK, the cheep yellow multimeter you referred to as a hobbyist meter is fine for home use on main supply it will measure up to 750 V AC demestic instalations in the UK is 230 V AC Australia is 240 V AC so that meter will be fine, I have been using that same meter for 22 years and I have never had a shock or any problems with it, but I do agree with you on durability don’t expect it last as long as mine has mine has been repaired twice since I first got it. Fluke are over priced and over rated. I now use uni-t they are fairly new to the market nice and cheap but high quality.

Why cant they just make a meter that does it all? Tired of switching between meters all the damn time.. and explaining which meters are for what is just getting annoying.. fluke =hv and amp. Klein for auto range. And chinesium weng fung for ohm and capacitance… lol..

Your vid is the nicest guide I had never saw in my entire life. I’m an amateur rider and I need this type of info in order for me to check if my motorcycle’s electricals are functioning or not. Very true, there are a lot of multimeters in the market and, somehow, I need to find a suitable quality for my motorcycle’s maintenance. Thank you again sir for this vid and Keep Safe.😊👍

It’s kind of scary that you can die from using a hobbyist meter. If you buy one for a simple car electronics diagnosis, you will likely have it sit around the house for years. At any point someone could pick it up and use it to test house electronics, unaware of the danger.

I recently tested many multimeters great and small but for also measuring a higher frequency AC waveform at 10 kHz AND a square wave. Most meters won’t handle that frequency and are specified at 40 to 400 Hz or "up to 1 kHz" or something. The frustrating thing is that almost no manufacturers include the AC frequency bandwidth in their online promotional pages. You have to find a manual and, usually, it will be buried in there someplace. Even Fluke doesn’t have this spec on their web site or their "Fluke Product Guide" comparison chart. And I think some get confused because meters that can read frequency might say "Frequency: Up to 50 MHz" right below the AC voltage specifications and people might think it applies to AC bandwidth. Of course, they are two entirely separate things. But I found some interesting things in testing. A Fluke 115 will not handle 10 kHz but is spec’d for only up to 1 kHz and it does that, and a little beyond, just fine. A Fluke 87-V handles 10 kHz which is within its spec. And OWON BT41T+ (a Chinese meter) is spec’d up to 10 kHz. (It is a real treasure hunt to find the spec in their manual because all of the AC voltage specs are in terms of "<1kHz" or ">1kHz" and the upper limit is hidden elsewhere but you can find it.). An old Fluke 8060A I have was easily the best performing True RMS meter I had at 10 kHz or any frequency or wave shape within its spec. This is all done with analog circuitry doing the "thinking". And speaking of the cheap (often free) Harbor Freight (CEN-TECH) meter: It was actually pretty good. It is obviously the low budget meter design that just takes average and scales it to display "RMS" which works only for a sine waver (just like the cheap $5 meters with needle movements). So at a low frequencies it was typical with a good RMS reading for a sine wave and the square wave reading about 11% too high. Normal for that design for a meter. Working up to 10 kHz the frequency response dropped off quite gradually at 9 kHz the square wave was now reading perfect. The roll off from the frequency fully offset the original 11% high square wave reading. At 10 kHz, maybe a percent low. Of course, the Harbor Freight meter has terrible build quality and other drawbacks.

Hi, great video and the only one I found to be so quick and informative.
I am looking to test PC motherboards and old retro game console boards as well as small CR button batteries like those found on Gameboy games for internal saving.
Would you recommend an expensive multimeter for more accuracy? Or should I just get something like the AstroAI you linked in the desc?

    Cheers!

This guy is 100% right I’m a first year apprentice electrician and I’m here to tell you Those cheap meters that you see on wish and banggood. Or garbage low volt only like maybe your car if you’re lucky. Are they accurate to within a degree they are accurate. If you’re not paying 50 to $100 for a meter don’t bother. You’re just buying garbage at this point. And look at the name brand and God forbid if you get it from China question It absolutely!!!!!!! And guys like this online who are out there to help you or pretty awesome take advantage of that. Cuz I go to school and I pay a tuition in college and work during the day as an apprentice and it ain’t cheap. So anyone giving you advice like this online you might want to follow a little bit but do your background definitely on who’s telling you what because not all the people on YouTube are I call it the university of YouTube I’ve got The correct information.
