How do I bid on Japanese auctions? What are the costs?

Over the last few years I’ve featured a number of interesting products that were only for sale to the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM). While some were bought via eBay and others from Amazon.jp, many of the older, more unusual devices were bought through the Japanese Yahoo Auctions. This video explains how I go about doing this and how the costs can mount up.

Can anyone find the video he may have made for this thing? Thanks to youtube’s wonderful interface, I can’t figure out how to repeatedly show "next video in series"…

The next question is = Where do you get step=down transformers for 240 to 100Vac? I know there are 110Vac transformers, but they are not that good, sometimes it can be as high as 150Vac, depending where they are used and voltage in, up here it can and often is 250Vac!

This is japan, the bureaucracy is insane. It’s why Japan can no longer compete in world markets.

    Superb video sir

  9. iHelloway on April 13, 2022 at 6:00 pm

I do it though all ebays like that. It’s great to be in Europe with no import costs , but every time product is bigger and not from eu it hurts to pay for a privilege

As a person living in JAPAN, I find it very interesting in this procedure…
Also, place you bought it from, Yonago, is my hometown. What a coincidence…
    Anyway, enjoy shopping from Japan!!

  13. MegaMaster on April 13, 2022 at 6:01 pm

how do you get that this model is only available in japan? I also have this myself, and just bought in Europe with a 220 volt connection.

There must be a completely different economic outlook in Japan. I’ve been viewing a number of vintage HiFi items on eBay, and almost all of those listed by Japanese sellers are disproportionately expensive, often at least double the price of others. In fairness, I have been looking at global products, some that originated in the UK, so perhaps those items were disproportionately expensive for the chap in Japan to begin with.

  15. Tarheel1986 on April 13, 2022 at 6:05 pm

How do you go about RoHS in terms of importing vintage gears that contain lead in the solder used in them?

Ah we know all about how expensive it is to get goods delivered from Japan😨My partner is a collector of DVDs re films et from Asia and some of them films NOT on general release in ie Europe et She recently bought a DVD and once again what could be considered £12-15 UK was equivalent of £21 plus shipping £7 plus customs £12 altogether yep £40 !!!!!!!!!!!! I would add that she doesn’t buy unless its kind of absolute 👀😊Also it should be noted that those films often DON’T have ENGLISH SUBS!! which one could argue is because of the homogenous nature of the Japanese towards foreigners.. it’s OK for US and EU films to be sold in Japan but they inc Japanese subs OR at least Eng Subs for those able to read English even if they can’t speak it?? So yes always beware and double check ie CUSTOMS/SHIPPING cost inc in some instances PACKAGING costs!! 😨

  21. QuabmasM on April 13, 2022 at 6:11 pm

Lost me at the extra "won charge". How the HELL do you SURPRISE CHARGE someone for winning the auction? Unacceptable….unless I can charge them all for a $13 receiver fee & $20 effort fee. SMH, you got scammed bro…that international delivery fee is pure BS. Better to make a friend with a Japanese local & have them ship it to you at standard charges.

  22. Sepehr on April 13, 2022 at 6:12 pm

now imagine buying a set of 4 wheels….

  23. Richard Larson on April 13, 2022 at 6:13 pm

You left out a key point. Japan has both 50 and 60hz electricity.

  24. Rodrigo Miyamoto on April 13, 2022 at 6:15 pm

My experience with JAUCE is the worst possible. Be aware that the delivery fee is just an estimation. My final delivery fee is 7 times the estimated fee. #jauce

I think the mini disccd combo Techmoan bought was broken as I can’t find or haven’t seen this so called video demonstrating it.

  26. andyhello23 on April 13, 2022 at 6:17 pm

It would be cheaper once a year, goto japan yourself, buy your stuff test it in hotel, package it, and send it by courier from there yourself.

If your buying loads from japan, it would be cheaper to just go there once a year to get the stuff you want.

  27. Benign Word on April 13, 2022 at 6:18 pm

does anyone know why products on the japanese auction site jauce are so cheap?

  28. Rinner on April 13, 2022 at 6:22 pm

Japanese packaging is worth the price of admission.

There are ways to avoid import tax, in the UK customs and duty by law cannot be paid on baby clothes, grocery items, safety equipment etc. buyee gives you the option to edit your invoice to one of these things, if you do customs should not pick up on it and you’ll avoid the charge. happy days

  31. l4d 1k0 on April 13, 2022 at 6:25 pm

The package obviously was supposed to be shipped by an airdrop out of an Airbus A400M tailgate.

  32. Dave Birley on April 13, 2022 at 6:26 pm

Obviously the thing didn’t work as there has been no video of it on Techmoan’s channel.

I had a girlfriend who lived in Japan. She was never interested in helping me do anything, so I wasnt even able to acquire the odd souvenir from her country by way of Japan Post.

I want to buy a Walkman. Which page would you recommend? I’ve looked at the jauce and buyee pages a bit, but most of the items sold are "junk". I’m on a $45 budget, trying to find a good quality walkman.

  41. Joey VanOstrand on April 13, 2022 at 6:37 pm

I buy and sell a LOT of guitars and amplifiers.
I absolutely REFUSE to deal with any "auction" or sale going to or coming from Japan unless it is from a reputable, well known distributor.

That whole false bravado and "honor" thing they cluck on and on about?
Doesn’t exist. Been proven to me way to many times.

It all sounds like you have a lack of trust in other people and prefer to pay much money for the same. I found this one in black in the Netherlands for the same price X)

  44. Françoise Dupré on April 13, 2022 at 6:40 pm

In the last week I have seen MD’s described as "junk" and coming from Japan. Now this has clarified the use of the word junk.

JFTR: The majority of electrical and electronic items like this bought from Japan will be 100 volt. Very few (if any) will have the ability to switch to a different voltage. Buyer beware!

    Can I buy from India

  49. Callum Sciacca-Bognar on April 13, 2022 at 6:46 pm

Did you use fragile packaging? if you do they way over pack it. Which puts the price up alot.

  50. master ball on April 13, 2022 at 6:50 pm

A legit company but you will pay too many hidden charges that is much more expensive than the actual item on the bidding… Please avoid if you can.
