Old school washers are better – Why we bought Maytag commercial

We were fed up with front-loading H.E. washers that don’t use much water to clean your clothes. So I explain why we bought Maytag old-school commercial washer over the Speed queen commercial. The washer is Model #MVWP576KW and the dryer is electric Model #MEDP576KW or Gas is Model #MGDP576KW

My wife and I bought a house in 2019 with a Kenmore washer and dryer made in the mid 1980’s. They’re older than us and still going strong.

  2. Tom Douglas on April 19, 2022 at 12:14 pm

Ours is 44. Had repair man out years ago when daughters were young and hair pin was stuck in it. He said hang on to it as long as possible. Only problem is that its only 25 inches wide and just fits along side the dryer in the laundry room. New ones are 27.5 inches so I hope it outlasts us.

  3. raymond COTE on April 19, 2022 at 12:14 pm

These "NEW" washers suck. I have a glass top and you can see that most of the clothes don’t even get into the cycle. I stop it after it fills up and add water to WASH the clothes.

The agitator clutch is made out of plastic, we wore out the first one and after much teeth pulling warranty replaced it. Now we trying to get warranty to replace the second. one

I will never buy another front loading washer again. They just don’t clean worth a crap.

My Whirlpool washer is pushin’ 35 years old & of course still works fine.

I have a maytag washer and dryer at least 40 years old, still going strong and cleans my clithes, even has a suds return on it for really soiled clothes. Just purchased a maytag dishwasher, we will see howclong that will last. Old one which was a sears kenmore konked out on us after 11 years.

  8. Larry Pitt on April 19, 2022 at 12:23 pm

Yes anyone that has a appliance that is pre-2000 before the computer chips and boards. You need to have it repaired even if it cost you three or $400. This new stuff will always give you a headache at some point. Even if you have the warranty. It’s going to be a problem because there are so few technicians that can actually repair them so the backlogs on someone coming to your house and actually fixing the problem is zero to none .

We bought our front load whirlpool washer and dryer back in 2012. We have had no real issues with them. We paid a lot of money because we bought them right when front loaders were making it big on the market. The machines wash and dry the clothes actually really well. We use laundry detergent pods and as long as you use the right amount of pods, it works fantastic. We will eventually replace them to get possibly some newer technology but the main cleaning aspect of them is great

just tear of the lid lock so you can opening it while it still runs. Did that to a machine years ago,I hated that lock. One thing to check is to make sure that your machine actually uses hot water when selected. I don’t know if that is just the crappy new machines (non commercial) that are set wrong or if some of these commercial ones are as well. I have experienced new washers (non commercial) that when hot water is selected they still only use a few seconds of hot water then automatically add cold water. When you stop them and reach your hand there to find just luke warm spots and cold spots. It is as if the new washers are scamming a user out of being able to actually wash using hot water. So just something to check with these commerical ones to make sure they are operating properly on the hot setting.

Great video, detailed and very helpful. May I ask two questions, please? I’m considering buying the same units here and I’m wondering the following:

    1. Would I be able to soak my laundry overnight? I often do that. With my present machine, all I have to do is keep the lid open and the cycle won’t move past the first shake cycle action

    2. You mentioned this unit had a lid lock. But then you said the cycles stop once you open them, matter what it’s doing. So to confirm, you are able to open the lid at “any” time? Or is it actually fully locked at times and it can’t be over-ridden/opened?

    3. If you are able to open the lid at any time, does the cycle automatically resume once you close it back down? Or do you have to click a button and if so, does it resume from where it last left of?

    Thank you in advance!

  16. Smart Home on April 19, 2022 at 12:34 pm

Thank you for making this video and informing us of the aspects of your purchase such as registering and warranted periods.

My washer & dryer are Whirlpool Duet Sport. They are front loaders and the washer is HE. They get my clothes clean. Yes, they do take longer but I am retired so time is not an issue. I do have to leave the washer door open after use to stop mold from forming, but I close it when I get my clothes out of the dryer. My machines are super efficient and quiet. I have only had a problem when I had my brother come to stay with me for a short time. The washer stopped working and gave me a code that too much soap had been used. He did not remember that I had told him to ONLY use 1/4 cup of HE soap & he used 1/2 cup of normal soap.

I have found that most people who say their clothes are not getting clean are using the wrong soap. I use a HE soap Persil & I use it because it cleans my clothes and does not bother my sensitive skin.

BTW; my washer & dryer are 14 years old and have never given me any issues other than when my brother used too much soap. Because they are in the basement I purchased the drawer bases to elevate them in case of possible flood. I live alone now so I only do one load per week. When my now ex wife and children were here, it was used daily two loads per day.

by the way the WP in the model numbers means Whirlpool.

I love my 35 year old Maytags. I don’t intend to replace, just repair. Dryer – was it gas or electric?

  19. S M on April 19, 2022 at 12:36 pm

Hi. I’m wondering if there are any mechanics/repair techs/etc out here and what their opinion is. When the washer fills, the motor turns on & off to rotate the drum so all the clothes get wet when filling. In a commercial setting, a couple of loads a day, everyday, won’t this cause the motor or the start switch to wear out faster? For instance if you turn a light switch on and off continuously, the switch will break. I mean if you’re only doing 2 loads, once or twice a week – okay. But, these are commercial washers that are meant to do numerous loads daily. Opinions? FYI, I was leaning towards the Maytag until I saw this feature.

The difference is not the belt or parts as much as the engineering and simpler design.

  21. Accurate Appliance Electronics Services on April 19, 2022 at 12:39 pm

Our wonderful government and all the do gooder special interests and the EPA decided that appliances were inefficient and needed improvement. Stuck there noses where it did not belong and told experts how to build machines.
So the government created the HE standard and forced total redesigns of all appliances.
Basically ALL HE appliances are cheap lightweight junk that will only last 3-5 years. What had reliable AC motors nor has unreliable DC motors and motor controllers.
Appliances are simple one purpose devices.when designs were kept simple Reliability was high
HE designs are complex and have double the repair costs and frequency of older models.
Appliances do not need microprocessors, Bluetooth, TV screens etc.
Write your congressmen and get the HE standard revoked. Then we need Americans to make American machines.
But the last few generations do not want to work in a factory and most of the great American companies are now overseas and not American. So how can you expect American Quality (Maytag) from Asia ???
On the other hand HE has been great for Appliance repair companies. We have more work than we can handle.
If you own an old Appliance. Take good care of it and keep it. Do not buy new.
Silly rich Americans buy new. New Junk.

We have a mid 90’s model Maytag. Got it for $50 at a garage sale a few years back after our 4 year old Whirlpool that we bought new needed a transmission replacement. I pulled the front off of the Maytag and saw that it was still made like they were in the 70’s. They last forever! Unfortunately the barrel with the agitator is small, still have to take comforters to the laundromat. That is my only drawback on these type of machines. I wish they made them bigger.

  23. CANADIAN UKRANIAN on April 19, 2022 at 12:41 pm

Had to laugh when you said the washer should last at least 10 years plus. We bought our Maytag washer 47 years ago,and it is still going strong.

I don’t know our front loads can last 8 whole years before they blow up. LOL

  24. Marianne Odell on April 19, 2022 at 12:42 pm

Lowes website has poor reviews for Maytag/Whirlpool but this was for high-tech washers. One of the complaints was constant error codes requiring a visit from a service person-usually taking weeks to get an appointment. Where can I find one of these “old school” machines??

  25. Marilyn Pittman on April 19, 2022 at 12:44 pm

I just bought a Midea top loader washer and hate it! Clothes come out with specs of dirt on them. Was so surprised when Lowes said "Too bad, call Midea". Still fighting with them. It is also VERY noisy, clanking and thumping.

  26. BigBad John on April 19, 2022 at 12:44 pm

Funny after reviewing the same models, our washer died, shorted to ground. It had been working fine until my wife soaked some towels in hot water. So the washer lasted exactly 2.5 years. The screws they used are all security type with the pin in the middle of the allen screw. There’s no repair guys available for 30 to 45 days. Can’t wait to tear into it. Best advice, extended warranty is a good idea.

  27. Matt Hemmelgarn on April 19, 2022 at 12:45 pm

I bought the same Maytags a few years ago. No electronic boards to fail and now front loading. They work great.

  28. Blighted on April 19, 2022 at 12:45 pm

Thank you for this video. I was going to buy a Speed Queen, but you convinced me to go with a Maytag. It’s being delivered on Tuesday!

  29. Nonna617 on April 19, 2022 at 12:45 pm

So glad I saw this. I was thinking of a front loader, as they do look so pretty!

  30. George PPS on April 19, 2022 at 12:45 pm

We replaced our old school washer with a newer Kenmore washer that’s not even the highest end. It came with some “smart” features like load detection and auto water levels. All work terrible! And the cover is locked all the time! Water can’t be adjusted easily!

  31. Sarah Richards on April 19, 2022 at 12:46 pm

I have both a front loader and a top loader as they both do different things well. Front loader does wash better and use less water and spins the clothes much better so they have much less water in them and dry much quicker. But I need a top loader for soaking as some things need to be soaked in bleach overnight to be properly clean. Also heavey pet blankets and my husband (who works in mining) work uniforms need to washed in the top loader as the front loader cant soak in bleach and also it does not get out the build up of copper concentrate dust out. Frontoader would be quickly ruined from the dust.

  32. Roger Whiting on April 19, 2022 at 12:50 pm

Simple and basic? It is all plastic and electronics. Open the console and look underneath.

  33. Bruce McGee on April 19, 2022 at 12:50 pm

I’m running a Whirlpool washer and dryer that was built in 1971. Both are used weekly.

  34. drphosferrous on April 19, 2022 at 12:51 pm

Whenever I’m called up to fix a washer and I see an old school model with no digital interface or complex electronics i go "yeah i can fix it". There’s only 4 or 5 things that can break and they’re all fixed with a cheap part and easy work.

  35. Albert Carello on April 19, 2022 at 12:52 pm

This washer should outlast me. The only downside of this washer is not letting in straight hot water when you need it. I hope MAYTAG corrects this issue.

  36. Jeff Wallace on April 19, 2022 at 12:52 pm

    Good demonstration.

My family had an appliance business from 1965-1990. We rebuilt tons of washers.

I now sell appliances at Lowes. I prefer front load machines. The ones at my home are 12-years old.

Thank you so much for this video, I wasted money on a new samsung P.O.S. "washing" machine. I thought I was going crazy thinking that it wasn’t working🤯🤯🤯

My boss at the appliance store always called Maytags , the Italian washer . He was Italian and always said the old Italian ladies will only buy Maytags because they were the best ! P.S. my son is in appliance business now and says the best washer is a Speed Queen and I have one he is right !

  39. Estrading Co on April 19, 2022 at 12:57 pm

I bought my LG washer 48 years ago and it is still going strong. You look around the world and see why LG washers and dryers are No. 1 seller in the world; that says it all.

  40. MCBatty80 on April 19, 2022 at 12:58 pm

    Hi Pete
I know this is an older video, I was reviewing the Maytag v’s speed queen video. I also watch stuff work (Had already disabled the lock mechanism on my top loader and bypassed the close switch, as I was disappointed on the cleanliness of the clothes. It turns out that the auto fill mechanism is not filling the tub enough to wash our clothes properly). My straight agitator works to pull the clothing down the centre with a normal load of clothes. I am querying why they would use a load full of jeans and not other clothes. Have they just selected a specific type of clothing that their patented spiral design works far better than a straight one? Do people have that many sets of jeans and only wash them together in a full load? How many loads of only jeans do people wash?

  41. Jeff Mattel on April 19, 2022 at 12:58 pm

    No they are not.

  42. George Smith on April 19, 2022 at 1:01 pm

Still have my early 90’s Kenmore fridge with no computers, no in door dispensers, regular ole ice trays you have to dump (fine with us since we use distilled water). It’s loud, but it just keeps running and running and running while my brothers’ $2500 LG and Samsung died in the second year. Also have the 90’s vintage top loading Kenmore washer and matching dryer. No electronics/computers/digital displays to break

  43. Otis on April 19, 2022 at 1:02 pm

My GE He Front Loading Washer Works Great. Never had an issue. The washing cycle takes longer than a non-He Toploader, but otherwise, the clothes get really clean. To each their own.

  44. chaotic/Silence on April 19, 2022 at 1:03 pm

I love our front load, so far 11 years and no issues and I can wash 3x the amount of clothes in one wash using an 1/8 of the water a top load does.

  45. laserbelly on April 19, 2022 at 1:04 pm

I purchased my Duet (front loader) combo from my son because the water inlet assembly went bad and they didn’t want to have it repaired. I did notice the low water level it washed at. I researched on the internet and was able to adjust the water level higher. It comes up about 1/2 way up the window now. My clothes are clean. I love its selectable extra rinse cycle. The combo is going on 15 yrs now. Love um !

  46. Daniel Clint on April 19, 2022 at 1:06 pm

That is so Lowe’s and Home Depot can sell you an extended warranty. Same machine, can you say rip off?

  47. Hister Shellac on April 19, 2022 at 1:06 pm

so you say but water consumption can be as much as 4x’s higher and like an Escalade can you imagine if there were one in every home? can your wee brain work out what outcomes that would have? as the reality of american and western resource over-consumption increases there will be many opportunities for ‘i told ya so moments’. Bro, water in the West is GONE. it’s all spoken for. water wars will be brutal.

  50. The Lonesome Drifter on April 19, 2022 at 1:12 pm

Too bad that washer is far from old school lol. Digital control board, Flimsy suspension rods that’ll never last more than 3 years, and a Chinese sheetmetal transmission that the bearings will roar in 5yrs. All that washer is a cheap whirlpool with fancy maytag decals, and a warranty that fool you to buy it
