My maternal family is from Vienna (20 miles east of Anna), another sundown town. Growing up I heard so many stories about the local history. Like what the name Anna stood for, stories about lynchings and black settlements being burned to the ground… As a kid, I thought they were just made up town legends, turns out they were absolutely true.

I live in Anna and have lives within close proximity my whole life. I would say this is very interesting. I have black family here and I have to say there is for sure a racism problem in Anna. Along with a pedophilia problem. Lots of creeps, crackheads, and idiots.

In rural and regional Australia, it’s still extremely common, even typical, for black people ( indigenous, Aboriginal,..or ‘ Koori ‘ nations ) to be tightly restrained to a particular area, or ‘ side ‘ , of a town, typically on one side of, say, a Main Street, parallel to , but entirely segregated from the white ‘ side ‘. Until quite recently, schools, pools, parks, hotels, restaurants, etc. were either segregated, or simply entirely ‘ off-limits ‘ to black people. Thankfully, there are still very substantial numbers of Kooris who live in entirely indigenous communities, deeper into what we call ‘ the bush ‘ or ‘ Outback ‘.
Need to see the tax charts. Google time. Wild that there’s a wood bridge with high property taxes. Not in NC.

Cairo, IL is the only city at the confluence of two major rivers in the world which has not developed into a metropolis.
Back about 25 years ago I went through Anna stopped at a small restaurant. Once I stepped out of the car…..it was like the whole town stopped. I went inside to eat the waitress that took my order was young….. She made sure I had refill on my drinks…. There was a older gentleman sitting off to the side that said to his friend…( You see that?! Somethings wrong here Vern!….. He should be serving us ….not her serving him!….. Those people don’t belong here……) .. So I slowly finished eating. The waitress came back with my bill and said ( Be careful handsome,.. you have people watching you) I went to pay…..I paid with my debit card and I had to show my ID twice to the older lady at the cash register she threw my receipt on the ground and I just left it there. So I get ready to leave . couple was standing close to my Camero….I heard one say ……( I’ll be damned if I let a spc nigg. live here). All of a sudden I had a cop following me until I got out on the highway…..so you know…
If Illinois did not have cook county controlling everything – there would not be so many people leaving. I don’t think it’s taxes. It is politics. And of you live in any other suburb not controlled by cook county – your vote will never matter. People started to realize that.

Not political… yet talks favourably of BLM, which is political. BLM is about power projection and power redistribution, and uses violence as one of its tools to achieve those objectives, not unlike Antifa. Sounds like the kind of thing southern Illinois fits well for given its past. There are two kinds of people in most advanced, Western societies: Those who use the political, democratic process, and those who want to bypass it for their own benefit. BLM/Antifa people opt for the latter, not unlike (again) white supremacists of the past. And like all American leaders, the lead figures build fancy mansions for themselves while evading taxes. It is a curious parallel that these movements show.

In regards to Illinois losing population due to high taxes I think you put too much emphasis on that. Sure, high taxes are not an incentive for businesses to move there and people want to live in places where the tax burden is lower – no argument there. There are other factors, however, that are more compelling. Climate for one. People are moving out of the northern "rust belt" states to the "sun belt" states. Another reason is the demise of both the coal industry and the disappearance of manufacturing jobs. If people flock only to states with low taxes then New Hampshire and Delaware would be booming!!!

There were sundown towns all over the place not just Anna. My grandmother lived in east Alton illinois and on the abstract for the property it said it could not be sold to a black person. There also was a sign close to the edge of town that said no blacks allowed after dark( don’t know the exact wording).

I grew up in Jonesboro which Anna-Jonesboro are pretty much just one town really. Unfortunately the history is true. Not sure why you took rollercoaster rd to get from Anna to Jonesboro.
Wrong dude , lowest cost of living in the country, rent is awesome even in the bigger town of Carbondale, a college town, or Marion or Murphysboro people just want to live a quiet life in Anna and its quiet except for the bar scene on the weekends
I’ve been quite a few places and have only found one or two that I would live in other than Southern IL. Spent almost 40 years here, I love it and always will. Even when I move to Missouri to escape the insane leftist policies out of Shitcago that have destroyed it.

What year did they take down that Billboard? It would have technically been illegal (or would have made the town vulnerable to lawsuit) after the 1964 Civil Rights Act, but illegal displays of racism lingered long after that in this part of the country. But I am struck at how NICE the place looks today. Compare it to drive thru videos of other Illinois towns that are losing population, like Danville or Wood River, and it’s nothing like them. If you didn’t know better, you might think you were seeing some wealthy suburb of a big city.
