Wermy, you inspired me to tap into my childhood with your GBZ videos. I’m almost done with an ABXY LR game boy color zero that I’ll post on the Sudomod forums once I’m finished. It isn’t perfect, but it would’ve been a lot worse without your videos helping me along the way. So thanks!

Hi wermy! New sub here. I am fascinated by your RetroPie projects. My Dad has always been into electronics and when I was a little girl he and I did some little "projects" together (I basically watched him make stuff) Unfortunately now he’s got terminal cancer and I want us to do a project together for old times and memories. I really want to put together a Game Boy Zero but I have no soldering experience minus a few things he showed me when I was a little girl. I don’t think he’s strong enough to do more than just teach me soldering and guide me through a build so I’d need it to be very simple. Would Kite’s board fit the bill? And if so, how do I get my hands on one?

!!!! love the workspace!! good to finally put a face to the voice, been watching for a while, your videos are great, and I wanna try to make a GBZ someday soon using your tutorials 🙂 Keep up the great work!!

  24. katie_incredible on October 25, 2019 at 7:39 pm

I always figured I was "ok" at soldering, but not very good. Never could do anything fancy, and couldn’t get to small areas easily. Until I bought a proper Hakko set – in my case the FX-888D. Suddenly I found out that I could solder, and solder pretty well, considering. Hands still shake, and I still need to learn the value of proper heat application and tip selection, but overall, the amount that a decent soldering iron will improve your soldering skills cannot be overstated.

  31. Mario Semiglia on October 25, 2019 at 7:48 pm

Hey wermy! I know you wanna focus on tools and hardware but I would really like seeing a video tutorial of everything that kan be improved on the software part of the GBZ project, like how to change resolution and aspect ratio, how to overclock the pi correctly for each of the systems, how to change the scale of the letters in the main menu, hide unnecesary messages and so on… it would be awsome. Thanks for getting me into electronics, its a new hobby that gives me a tone of funn 😀

hey wermy, great video as always 🙂 could you do some kind of soldering tutorial? i really want to build a gameboy zero but i have no experience with soldering… keep up the good work 🙂

  42. ToyKeeper on October 25, 2019 at 7:55 pm

Good stuff. 🙂 I have a pretty bad set of helping hands which often does more to get in the way than to help. Those QuadHands look great! I’m also trying to learn more about circuit design, building a lightsaber driver in Kicad. Because, well, shiny things. Can’t have enough shiny things.

  43. californiakayaker N6GRG on October 25, 2019 at 7:55 pm

Three things right off. 1 Meter. It should have an auto shut down, and I have been in situations where measurements were stipulated to be "True RMS". so, just get a meter that has both. I have an Amprobe that does both, but, Why not get another option while filling both objectives , for less money. Third opting which I’ve found to be REALLY handy is a Clamp Meter. You can get a Clamp meter , true rms, dc current, auto shut off, for very little. In May 2017 I paid $30 for my UT210E and its an amazing tool.

    2. A hot air station. For right around $50 you can be ready to do everything you would do with a 30 dollar soldering station plus be able to use "solder paste" and mount super small smd surface mount components. You can also remove Surface Mount smd components. Worth every penny. You’ll need a good pair of tweezers for it.

3 a couple of cheap gadgets from ebay . Get the DSO138 oscilloscope. You will need to spend about $150 or more to beat this cheap instrument. It works very well. Don’t get the kit. ALSO, get one of the cheap component testers. The kit is ok with this one. Amazing what you can find out about components with it. They have a screen that shows you (identifies) most semiconductors, diodes, measures capacitors, and many other components !

  44. Daniel on October 25, 2019 at 7:55 pm

This video was perfect 🙂 I’ve been messing around with basic electronics for a long time, but on a tight budget, so I haven’t really looked at some of these things before. I’ll definitely be ordering one of those magnetic silicone mats now though.

  45. Lance Walker on October 25, 2019 at 7:57 pm

Do NOT purchase I cheap soldering iron, most especially ones which do not have a dedicated power supply. Please, if you are a beginner stick to the name brands, the Weller WLC100 40-Watt Soldering Station was my first iron and is priced at just $33.96 on amazon.
    YOU DESERVE BETTER!

is sadder same thing as solder ?

  47. Kevin Hyde on October 25, 2019 at 8:00 pm

Pretty cool video. I wish I would have seen it when I first started soldering. Would have saved a lot of time. Especially the solder wick. Just wish people had it local ants I didn’t have to order it.

  49. Tevis Weir on October 25, 2019 at 8:01 pm

I made a retropi from following random video’s online, but seeing you make all those cool mods; VMU, Gameboy 0, minty pi etc. Really Really makes me want to do this!! The only thing holding me back is… at 32 years old I have never soldered anything :(. I love these videos. Is it really easy to do? Would you make a vid about basic soldering electronics etc. for newbs like me?
