Hey Luke! Thanks for posting this! You could probably add the Mac Pro 4,1. I just picked one up for $150 with a stock GT120 512MB video card, 8GB RAM, and 500GB 5400rpm drive. It performs faster than my 2019 iMac 21.5" which is a dog! Also, I noticed that the iMac 2009 you recommended has a 3.06GHz CPU. I was wondering if it’s upgradeable?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, late 2008). The processor is 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3. Startup Disk Macintosh HD. And Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB. All this means very little to me so I was hoping you could tell me something about it. I’ve kept it in excellent condition. I had to take it to the Apple store a few years back and everyone really surprised me about what great shape it was in for it’s age. I told them they could buy it for a thousand bucks and got some good laughs✌🏽️– The battery is shot

Hey I just wanna thanks for your professional opinion and you have no idea how valuable your opinion is to someone like me like I’ve only been in computers now for about two years and still don’t know jack ,and your right I’m not getting this for graphics, I want a Mac for music production and they are better than windows and for right now at least windows is better than Chromebook which was my first and only computer so far and it was the cheapest Walmart had so I’m sure you can imagine just how awesome it really is lol , while windows is catching up anything apple is far better especially if you’re running an interface to a guitar along with a mixer board along with some effects ,a modeling multiple effects preamp ,to a 100w tube head paired with a 4×12 cab that’s blasting out from 2 vintage 30s and 2 sidewinders which had become discontinued and illegal in most states for blowing out eardrums and that’s not counting the plug-ins I could get.So as you read I pretty much got what I need as for instrument and production tools cept for a decent computer, about 6months ago I got me an Ipad8 it’s all stock nothing fancy,it’s good but it’s more in essence like a phone than a computer like it can run phone apps but not computer ones ,like I really really REALLY need Ez-drummer just that alone would put me miles ahead than where I’m sitting now cause yes I can play guitar and bass but can’t play drums not even kinda, but anyway wrote all this to you because I want you to know how important it is to me someone is spending their time weeding through piles of old computers some would even consider obsolete, but not all of us are rich hell some of us are poor and I will like and I’ll sub when the internet is back up on my ipad my handle there is AnthonyStHellhammer thanks again and I’ll send you some songs after they are done if you like

How did you get Catalina on a 2009 iMac? Best I was able to do was High Sierra (10.13.6).

  30. Swamp croc on June 15, 2022 at 4:33 am

Buddy, this is awesome. I hope you do more. I have an iPhone, so does most of the family, and though I’m not a fan of Apple’s strict control over software and development, it does have advantages in longevity and compatibility. With all the shenanigans that Microsoft has been caught in (in the past) and currently, I’m looking to get more into Apple, but life is life and $$$ is limited. This, this is great. My family needs a good computer, on a strict budget, to do their school tasks with and maybe stream some shows or browse the net. I’m forwarding this to them now. Thanks again! I’ll always have to keep a PC for some of my tasks, but these look awesome too.

    I got a refurbished late 2013 21.5” imac.
    Specs & price:
    $199.99, free shipping, $12.00 tax
    GPU: GeForce GT750M
    Ram: 16gb 1.6ghz ddr3
CPU: 2.9ghz quad core intel i5
    Storage: 256 gb ssd
and it’s running Catalina. This was a steal imo

edit: I partitioned the drive so i can put high sierra on it as well. this means i can also use it as a monitor

Great video, Luke, with super useful tips for getting the biggest bang for the Mac-buck. But how did you get the 2008 Macbook Pro to run Catalina? A native Macbook Pro needs to be a mid 2012 or later for Catalina to be installed, right?

I’m still using my MacBook Pro mid 2012 that I bought brand new out of Highschool, and it’s still fast enough for me and while it’s now no longer receiving updates that’s fine cause I can use bootcamp for windows, I put a 2tb ssd in it it’s go 16gb of ddr3 ram, 2.5 ghz dual i5 with an intel hd4000 gpu i love it it was my first computer and has seen hard gaming without external cooling stands soooo it’s seen hard use and yet keeps trucking along, though I am now gaming on my new gaming pc desktop but if I ever travel I can still do some gaming on my Mac thanks to some of the upgrades I’ve done to it
