Is it worth getting TV calibrated professionally
Have a question and need help from anybody. I’m am looking at a 2018 Samsung Q9fn in 65 and 75 inch on amazon. I’m seeing prices listed on the 65 for $1958 and $2799-$2989 for the 75 inch. Which one is the better value?
I have some good news for anyone in Canada and that is that the P Quantum X is now available on the Costco site and it is only $2099.99 CAD it’s only the 65" but it’s here:) https://www.costco.ca/Vizio-Quantum-P659-G1-65-in.-Smart-4K-HDR-LED-TV.product.100494689.html
2018 shoot out in Europe was won by Panasonic OLED shame their not sold in the USA
I’d actually be wondering what was wrong if sony couldn’t match their own reference monitor since they made it lol. Not saying the sony oleds aren’t good, they are very good, but it would seem that sony would have an advantage here. I agree that people should take all online reviews and competitions with a grain of salt. I think it comes down to one’s personal preference. I have both Samsung and lg tvs. Sometimes I want bright daytime punchy colors- Samsung and sometimes I want the more ref quality picture – lg oled. The Lg and Sonyoled seem very similar but I prefer the OS of the Lg which is something that wasn’t taken into consideration for home viewing since this was a purely compare picture to reference competition
Is the Sony Z9d still a good bet?
Great topic.. Usually these professionals at the tv shootout make a clear statement during their presentation and that is that they and all the "calibrating guys" are an absolute minority.. 99% of tv owners dont know what calibration is, they use whatever they like. And that is fine, and this is reality. The reason why these guys are so important is they really contributed to the "reference" picture modes on modern tvs. They are so good today, 10 years ago you would have to get a 30k reference studio monitor to get this level. Also a "reference" calibrated tv is looking very punchy and saturated.. You would be amazed how a correct gamma makes a tv look "punchy" vs. a rather small deviation will cause the picture to loose its "Wow" effect.. Most "average joe" tvs, have a "brighter" gamma and a black crush, so the picture looks brighter but also punchy at the same time 😉 But when you could compare it to a correct dark gamma with reference shadow detail, lets name it the real deal punchy picture, I bet, even average joe would pick the reference picture…
When you combine the X1 Ultimate chip with an OLED..💯
I am a gamer so I love my poppin HDR on my 55 inch 2019 Vizio P series.
What you think of Hisense ULED XD technology? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K60iwf7nvzU
Trying to decide between 77" A9G or 85" Samsung Q90T….what do you think? They are roughly the same price right now where I am looking?
Stop burn-in with static images on your OLED by using the zoom control on your OLED

We need honest people like you give insight on these issues people spend thousands of dollars on these TV’s I’m still fighting to see if I should choose QLED or Oled …smh
Its confusing to consumers. Samsung does well on rtings.com but Sony seems to do better by user reviews.
I learned the hard way on what experts want and what I want. Example, with speakers the experts will say "flat response or linear" and guess what, I don’t. Apparently I like a lively, maybe even to some a harsh sound. I like a speaker that jumps. So sometimes just throw out what the experts say, and say to yourself, what the hell do I like?
Ultimately it’s personal taste and what you like and what you are use to. As Brian knows already, I’m in the process of getting a q9fn. I have consider oled both from Sony and LG. In the end it comes down to a few things for me. First, I’m a huge gamers, I love vibrant “inaccurate” colors while gaming, as well as brightness, personal taste. As well, fear of burn in was a another concern. I know burn in is and can be exaggerated, but the possibility was there. Price was another factor. Could I afford an Oled, yes definitely. Do I want to spend $7000 dollar on a tv that has a chance of burn in, not really. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bashing any oled TVs. Every time I watch movies at my friends house with his oled, I am blown away. But as for my usage, I will stick with qled for now.
You put all in one ,whole core of the subject of Blu-ray and tvs picture quality in professional manner,Brian.
Top stuff .There is lot of things to discuss ,like ISO 2000,perfect black level, perfect contrast , motion (in numbers),grayscale,
,chroma specifications and so on.That story about your 7000$ Sony tv ,sound like criminal case to me.
Watched that video from your car.You really nice ,firm and intelligent guy.Your wife must be proud of you,i bet.
Yeah I am not a fan of film grain either
Like you said, these shootouts are based on accuracy of intended source content. That doesn’t mean it’s the best picture. Working in the field, I can tell you most ISF calibrators say after calibrating a normal consumer set, the client will complain that the picture looks dimmer, the whites look yellow, and the overall picture looks worse with less pop.
Super right though i have two LG oleds , alot of 4k tvs, Lg great, Samsung is great , sony is great , Vincent from HDTV test will take brightness over an oled any day but thats him , i love my contras and whites .
Totally agree you have to go with what you like not what someone else says is right. Definitely been there with bluray.com lol
C9 FOR ME CHEAPER AND 2.1 HDMI FUTURE PROOFING
I heard the hdr on the a9g was pretty bad and dull looking from a whathifi review. Then again the setting he said he used to improve hdr seemed a bit odd one of them putting live colour on high which on my Sony TV would overly saturate the picture.
I disagree when you say that one should choose the a9g only if they are looking for the best accuracy. The beauty of the a9g is that I can set it to be close to directors intent, but it also has the best standard and vivid modes I’ve ever seen on a tv with the best enhancement controls out any manufacturer in my honest opinion. Dynamic contrast doesn’t crush, live color looks rich and super vibrant, soap opera effect is great and with less artifacts. Reality creation works really well too. I can switch up the style of my image as I want to and I love that. That’s what sets it apart from my c8 imho. On the c8, any sort of enhancements made the picture look worse not better. It only looked optimal when set to it’s accurate modes and maybe widening the color gamut and that’s it.
I know you don’t do calibration videos and have only done a few picture setting videos. But i would love a current picture settings video for the x900e. I have mentioned before, i currently have the 55 inch and have been playing around with the setting quite frequently to try and get them dialed in. I also love a bright, vivid, and sharp display, while also trying to avoid the grain and noise that comes with a lot of content. Thanks again for a great video!
Thoughts on the LG nano cell 9 series, have you seen it in person.. I’m thinking about saving for the micro led which is supposedly out after fall and the best screen/picture available…. Thoughts??
The future will be not Oled but LCD (dual layer lcd display) Once mass produced this will be the future.. https://news.panasonic.com/global/press/data/2016/11/en161128-4/en161128-4.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VETnxxo-ao https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I3s0eHrvgE
Quick tip on ABL. I’ve never seen or noticed it in in real life content. Only time I’ve ever seen it is when I check my screen uniformity on a grey screen or color screens after the same color has been on screen for a while you’ll barely notice it has dimmed slightly. So I wouldn’t worry about that at all if you do ever consider an OLED from LG. Can’t speak to the Sony OLED though.
Another comment: It is a fact that most of the people working there are making their living with calibrations.. So of course they will push a "reference" calibrated picture and explain how crucial it is.. So there is a a huge sales pitch involved 😉
The shootout link does not work in the description?
Hey whisper status 79 I think I share your taste in picture vibrancy and the clean look. I love my 900e and it is a 75” but I have been convinced that if I want the best movie experience I have to get an oled. I do game watch sports and news. The oled panels are so pricey and I do like Sony but from what I understand LG has better hdr presentation. I worry about burn-in especially with a 77” sized panel that cost so much. ( like you I do not want to go down in size) I feel like your 4k panel journey but do not wish to continue to move up if I am just gonna end up back with my current tv. I have read the comments and I need another opinion. I have used resources like Quantum’s calibrations to better my picture quality and the Xbr900e continues to impress. I don’t know if I am making a mistake by being talked into buying an oled display. I do watch Vincent, Rtings ect and they all seem to agree on best display being an oled. Please send me some thoughts on your oled experiences because (although I know plasma) I have never owned one or an oled, thanks!
Well said. I currently own a 55X930D & a 65C9. And TBH I don’t notice the ABL on the C9. It being my first OLED panel I don’t see it dimming at any point, again I use it in a dark room so I don’t blast it at 100% brightness, contrast etc. But I do notice my Samsung Galaxy S10+ dim very quickly when it’s cranked up but it’s an AMOLED cell phone not an OLED TV so that may be to conserve battery life thus rapid dimming. Regardless, thanks for the great content and take it easy!
We share the same opinion on this topic! 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
ill buy A9G in a heart beat and sprinkle it with a grain of salt babe!
Love my LG c9 even though I’m a Sony guy. I just couldn’t take Sony crappy android system, lousy support for older models and Sony disregard for future proofing. So no buyer remorse here.
Also, not worrying about burn in cause I’m not a dope who’ll will have my tv looking overly bright.
Like I said in my recent TV video, its a must to do a lot of research and see reviews on different TV’s but in the end, I stress to go and see these TV’s in person at stores if possible. This may change your mind on a TV. Everyone has a preference on how they like their picture to look.
Picked up a 55inch C9 last week, wow besides peak brightness blows away my x930e. I didn’t realize how bad HDR tone mapping was on my x930e. As well as being super accurate out of the box, extremely happy with LG’s 2019 Oled.
I couldn’t disagree more. Some TVs lift blacks and show more shadow detail than the reference monitors. On those TVs, you can see more in the night scenes in Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3. You might say I like that. I want to be able to see more detail. Well that is wrong, because those scenes are supposed to be dark, and hard to see. And while your inaccurately set TV might make those scenes more bearable to you, it will over lighten some other less starkly dark scenes, and make them look washed out.
A glass of wine is supposed took a certain shade of red, and a glass of blood another shade of red. If your TV is set to show the wrong shade of red, and you see a character drinking blood, and it looks like they are drinking wine, would you feel differently about the scene emotionally? I bet you would. It isn’t about what you like to look at, it is about what it’s supposed to look like in the first place.
Ok who’s gonna go out and buy a Sony A9G? 🤑
No first time I don’t agreed with you 😜🤔
I turned every processing because I really want the closest possible to "director was intended"😂🤣
I don’t have colour turn up like 70 or which is beyond vivid mode like qwantum😂🤣
So I have the allmoust cheapest Oled in my country 😂🤣
It’s a C8 and it’s 100$ more 💰 than B8.
Now the Sony A8 Oled is 600$ more or nearly 40% higher than C8 and the motion supposed to be better on them but software is worst, the Q90fn is double the price right now of C8 and the picture is worse, but weary good maybe the best when it comes to LED!
So the price is wery important when it comes to buying the TV,not some rigged shout out, that is what I was trying to say🤗🤗🤗
And that is all 2018 model because you can’t find one model of 2019 line because nobody can justify the price of the product, when he can buy last year model wich is 10% "worst"(same nits, colour gamut)🤔 for half the money that coast 2019 C9,Q90r,sony A9😉🧐🤗🤗🤗
I have a LG C9 and a C7 and they are both great. You need to look at your local display store and make up you own mind. Somebody else’s opinion can’t sway your brain when you actually go and look at these displays yourself. Look and learn , then choose.
Hi Bryan. Thanks for thoughts on the shoot out. I can only speak from my experience. Like you there was a time when I liked a picture to be super sharp vivid and saturated in color. I can remember the first time I saw a calibrated display and thinking it was so bland and lifeless. Over time I made adjustments more towards and accuracy and came to learn and fully appreciate the virtues of a properly calibrated display. Experience taught me just how much more of the subtle finer details and the overall gestalt of the picture can be seen and appreciated over a picture that is hyped and overblown in certain aspects but meanwhile is masking nuance. I purchased a A9F last year from Robert at V. E. and had it calibrated by them and couldn’t be happier. Another plus of calibration besides an even more accurate PQ is getting a panel with no issues. For me the extra $$$ was well worth it.
…. best ….
I was looking at the Samsung Q-70 lower in price then the Q-80 65inch in your opinion is the Q-80 worth the extra money ?
Spot on man. I chose my 65” Vizio quantum because I like bright scenes as well and with the features it had and the price. I felt it was the best overall and not breaking the bank. But now I got so interested in technology on TVs, I look at what would be good in the future for a 75” tv some day. I always go back and forth with what interests me and like you said I always get caught up with the specs and reviews I hear. I was almost certain I would get the a9g but when I got to check out the Oleds, the lack of brightness stops me. I’m in no rush because I love what I have now and the main reason to eventually get another is to have a bigger size. But when I go to my parents place, they have the 900f and it seems great as well.
Calibrators: Reference Picture, bla bla, bla.. customer: Survivor should look vivid 😀
Is the sony A8G alot darker then LG C9? and is hdmi 2.1 a must have?
Great video and channel. I wish reviewers here would pay a bit more attention to the smaller size sets (as would the manufacturers, but that’s another story). I was going to purchase a 43 inch set, but decided I have just enough space for a 50 inch. Considering the new LG Nano (although that’s edge lit), the Hisense H8F, or the Sony X900F. Any others I might consider? Think you might be able to do a video comparing these smaller sizes? Thanks and hope your wife’s health issues are in the past.
samsungs over saturated ass colors is annoying imo
Really love your thought process
Whisper status 74 if you get a chance take a look at lost in space season 1 blu ray man its stunning on my Sony a9f.
