The Top 5 Online Programming Certifications

Whether you’re choosing a language-specific or platform-oriented credential, it’s worth looking at my top five programming certifications for software developers.

I’ve talked several times before about attending to coding boot camps, doing nanodegrees but I’ve never actually talked about the best online programming certifications that are out there.

Nowadays, the entire programming workforce is changing so much and there are A LOT more options for those who want to become developers that, if you really want that, you should consider all possibilities.

Developer and programming skills are in high demand, and this isn’t changing anytime soon. This is why achieving a developer certification can help you keep an edge in the market by making you stand out among your peers. And the programs are getting stronger each day, especially with those online certifications.

So… What are the top 5 online programming certifications?

University structure crumble ? I agree that there are many good alternatives to college but 60% of the high school graduates are still attending universities. College is way too theoretical it is good see some alternatives but I don’t think college is going to crumble.

Have you actually tried out any of these sources you’ve mentioned? It would have been nice to know from “personal experience” how these sources you’ve mentioned are actually worth diving or spending money into. Instead you just say some marketing hooplah because you’re paid to do that.

  24. Raeanne on November 29, 2019 at 12:06 am

Hello. I have been thinking about this the past couple months becasue my husband is a Sr. Mechanical Engineer and has a phenomenol income. He knows several programs and can help me if I get stuck. I’m university educated and have a masters degree in social work and also a special education teaching certification. I worked in schools and with teens for over 20 years. However, I started in computer programming and worked for a computer company when I was a young adult. The education in this field seems to have changed.
My concern is that I am older. I’m 51, turning 52. I no longer have at home family obligations. Do you think this type of program would work for an older person such as myself that has the time and resources to devote to the educational piece? Also, I am looking for a career where I can work from an office part of the time as well as from home part of the time. I’m a bit of an introvert and spend a great deal of my time on the computer already.
Thanks for your input – anyone that would like to input.

  37. But Who Cares What I Think on November 29, 2019 at 12:19 am

I keep meeting people who tell me that they got hired before they even finished Free Code Camp. After 3 months with FCC (full time, going for it) I was really surprised to get a paid gig (just a temp thing) with a local business. I didn’t realize I already had something to offer. Before that, I spent over a year and a bucket of cash at… somewhere else. Beware!
At the beginning of the course, there was an assigned task that inadvertently revealed how many people completed the assignment. There were around 4500 entries. When I got near the end of the course, there was a similar assignment. At that point, there were about 225. An informed estimate would be that the drop-out rate was somewhere in the neighborhood of 95%.
A little before the middle of the course, the instruction just fell apart. There were mistakes in the teaching, blocks of code to add that were wrong (these went unfixed for months and are likely still there), there was instruction about one thing while accidentally showing something from further ahead in the course, errors in the school software that called right answers wrong (I mean, lots and lots of them – each with it’s own little flurry in the private forum until everyone knew that that was just how it was), nervous/fidgety/unsure teachers, a quiz showing the wrong block of code, things taught in the wrong order, inexcusable omissions in the content, the removal of a significant service that many students depended on (of course with hype about how the change was a good new focus and direction – yea right).
I could go on and on. At one point there was even an accidental page that said I had completed the course! The forum was splattered with angst. Really, what I’ve already said is nothing! It was one of the worst experiences of my life. I saw the dwindling numbers, but I thought "I’m not a quitter". Still, eventually I gave up also. I was a worse programmer after the course than before I started. The coding joy was crushed. I started looking for an entry level, non-tech job.
I won’t name this school, but trust me, you’ve heard of them. I think the reason people don’t speak out is that it’s a catch-22. If you can’t make it, you’re just a whiny loser, and If you make it, even though you know it was garbage, you want to use it as a reference. That leaves exactly no one to tell the truth, and a school that is hard to call to account. All I can say is that Free Code Camp is a welcome change. Some day I’ll look back at it and laugh? Well, maybe I will when I get my first check. I just have a little left to wrap up for that business, and thanks to FCC, I know how to do it.

Awesome video! I have been looking at a few of these but am really trying to go to the UC Berkeley extension program since I am in the Bay Area. It’s not the online program that you were talking about. From my understanding that one is actually about $12,000. Which is still pretty cheap as far as bootcamps go. But you are so right DON’T CHEAP OUT ON THESE!
