I worked retail for years and this is exactly what they taught us in training. Stay calm. Give them the money. Don’t react. It’s not worth it.
Last year a masked stranger invaded my home while I was alone and unloading groceries. He raped and robbed me at gun point in my own home. I didn’t cry. I didn’t scream. I did not resist. I treated him respectfully and asked him what he would like me to do next. He was stunned with my compliance and neutrality. I wasn’t rude or overly helpful I did not beg. I spoke when spoken to I was silent when commanded. I suggested compromises such as, "Would it be alright if we went to the store together to get condoms". I engaged in conversation with him as if he were a friend and a welcome guest in my home. This disarmed him. He asked me where all the valuables in my home were and I gave him a grand tour of my home no questions asked. Nothing impressed him enough to take so he just demanded sex instead and threatened to shoot me if I did not comply so I pretended he was a date and I pretended I was into it which stroked his power hungry ego.
Then he said let’s go to the store together like you suggested earlier. You can drive. I drove us calmly to the store together. He said now get out and buy me some graba leaves. Leave the car on and give me your phone and don’t talk to anyone just come right back to the car. I said okay no problem. I calmly walked into the store and calmly spoke to the store employee and some customers and they gave me a call phone to call police and stayed with me until 4 police officers arrived at the liquor store. The guy tried to come into the store to "come get me" but ran off with my car keys and my cell phone once he saw me on the phone.
Thanks Bed, Bath, and Beyond, your company’s theft and armed robbery training videos saved my life. And thanks intro to Psychology classes at college, I learned that criminals like rapists are usually after power so give them the "power" and walk away at your earliest opportunity. Let them think they have the upper hand and always value material possessions less than you value saving your own skin or your "pride".
