Doctor Who Video Games: A History

Doctor Who Video Games: A History

From 1983 to 2019, Doctor Who has had a fair few attempts at trying to make it big in the video game realm, was it ever truly successful?

We discuss from The First Adventure to The Edge of Time, what they were about, and look at any production notes that are available.

Great video. Doctor Who: Legacy was a really great game that more than anything really delved into the history of Doctor Who. It is missed. Doctor Who Infinity is a pale comparison.

I hope In he future we get a Doctor Who free roaming game, where we can collect various doctors, companions and enemies from the 56 years of the show also visit other worlds from the show

If I were to make a Doctor who video game then I would have like 3 missions for each doctor from 1 to 14 (yes I say the 14th doctor) and then like an adventure mode where you can choose to be any of the doctors or you could make your own timelord then you could choose any tardis or you could build your own by mixing and matching the console and the rooms and such also you get to make a sonic or use one of the doctors Sonics then there’s another mode sandbox where you choose your tardis and timelord and then you can do what ever if you think this is a good idea for a game I want to know if you would buy it and play it?

Edit:I thought of another game mode idea, online where you build everything and make everything like your sonic, tardis and you.

My favourite Doctor Who "game" was the Doctor Who Bot on Skype. Just being able to chat with Twelve was a dream come true! The greatest moment, I think, is when he asked me what I had been doing for a week. I was playing it as the chapters came out every Saturday. I said, "Nothing", and he actually responded, "Nothing?!" before throwing a snarky quip at me being a human and a puddingbrain.

    It was worth it.

I always thought a great way to deliver DW as a game would be to make a Point&Click adventure game.

Have you ever seen "Doctor Who" by Mobygames, circa 1992? It’s flawed but oddly enjoyable. You have to get the key to time, can’t shoot any guns but can get monsters to collide and that kills them. The Master appears randomly and will take a segment if he catches you. Being 1992, the player only gets 7 lives… 🙂

DOCTOR WHO SAY WHAT YOU SEE was an android game and was epic. sadly not supported any longer:(

  14. craigix on June 4, 2020 at 5:16 pm

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but there was actually an earlier doctor who game for the Amiga which is apparently really good even if the graphics are awful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXmemtkamts

As a joke, I said "If you ever feel useless, someone considered making a Dr Who first person shooter."
Now that I, think about that, I would buy that. Shooting aliens as a UNIT soldier, maybe be a Torchwood agent, a brainwashed person killing the silence, the brigadier doing UNIT stuff or perhaps the Doctor going slightly mad and pulling out a pistol, shooting Davros

i can’t wait for the new ones but dimensions as well i got return to earth it is hard for a while and after and hour is nearly unplayable

Where can I find doctor who the eternity clock on pc?

  19. Captain Sinclair on June 4, 2020 at 5:22 pm

My favorite Doctor Who game is the Fallout New Vegas mod Fallout Who Vegas. I think it’s got a good storyline, and has a TON of gameplay. And the best part is that you can choose to either not play it and continue down the standard New Vegas storyline, or you can play the mod and get DAYS of gameplay.

I wish they would continue the Adventure Games, going through the Matt Smith era then onto the Peter Capaldi era.

    I *LOVED* Doctor Who: Legacy.

  24. Mark Sutcliffe on June 4, 2020 at 5:30 pm

I played a LOT of Legacy. I thought it was pretty well done and didn’t milk you for micro transactions.

  25. M D on June 4, 2020 at 5:31 pm

I had always wondered why there were so few (almost none) games for the ZX Spectrum. I suddenly realized why after watching this video. The BBC wasn’t going to allow games on the BBC Micro’s competitor of course!!

  26. Aaron Collins on June 4, 2020 at 5:33 pm

I actually wish that Doctor Who had entered the VCR Board Game market in the early 1990’s.

  27. Oisin Jadran on June 4, 2020 at 5:34 pm

Like this if u agree that Doctor Who deserves an MMORPG which includes every creature and every place The Doctor has ever been to

  28. Sam Lowry on June 4, 2020 at 5:34 pm

My Dalek Attack for all it’s flaws in porting to the PC. Sampled Sounds used to crash and it had no save game function, but it did have a cool hidden level of 60s movie daleks in Japan – if you spot the obvious clue to the hidden base.
Best played with the level skip and infinite lives cheat as it takes a long time to get to Skaro.

But I still have a soft spot for the bizarre ‘Doctor What!’ on the spectrum 1986 even though it’s mechanics were awful.

  29. Maximus Prime on June 4, 2020 at 5:35 pm

Napoleon and the warlord? It’s the second doctor

  30. Scherzic Scherzo on June 4, 2020 at 5:39 pm

I still say a Star Wars: Battlefront-esque or Battle Royale game where it’s just all the major villain factions duking it out would make for a pretty good gameplay loop.

  31. Doc Skywalker on June 4, 2020 at 5:40 pm

if you wan’t to play properly i really hope you are able to use the screwdriver

  32. RubyBfb on June 4, 2020 at 5:41 pm

Would be cool if The Doctor used that sonic Wii remote in the Power of Three.

  33. WhoFan80 on June 4, 2020 at 5:42 pm

In the late 90s, early 2000’s, the BBC released an official Doctor Who screensaver game for either windows 95 or windows 98. In it, you controlled K9 on a grid of two colors – and the Daleks were trying to turn the grid a different color. You could also shoot the Daleks with K9.

I really want a 1st/3rd person doctor who open world game, I’d die for that to be made

  37. Coldlyiburn s on June 4, 2020 at 5:43 pm

I always though a doctor who game in the telltale style would work.

  38. Dojorkan Asakura on June 4, 2020 at 5:44 pm

I feel like the major difficulty the series often faces with video games is that with the many enemies the franchise has, they can’t usually be combated in a consistent way- such as out right attacks which doesn’t exactly "fit in" with Doctor Who’s vibe at least if you want to be playing as The Doctor. Maybe a FPS/TPS game where you play as members of Torchwood or UNIT would work but then that could very easily fall into seeming like a generic shooter unless given to the right kind of studio.

Without typical combat mechanics platforming, collecting, and mini-games seem like the way to go, but with a small budget may usually end up feeling like "shovelware" or microtransaction mobile games. Lego Dimensions is able to get away with things a little more due to its cartoonyness. While there are many games that don’t rely on or have little to know combat that are great its usually because they are able to make their own story around it and not have to sorry about making a particular existing franchise work with it.

I’d love to see something bigger from Doctor Who in gaming but its going to be a tough nut to crack.

  39. One Nerd on June 4, 2020 at 5:45 pm

I really wish they remade the adventure game and also make new ones and why does the new games have to be VR why???

  40. raydeen2k on June 4, 2020 at 5:46 pm

The Doctor Who adventure games were pretty cool, but hands down, the best DW game is the pinball game. It’s mostly a pinball game with small video game elements built in. And it’s totally awesome to see and hear. 🙂

  41. One Nerd on June 4, 2020 at 5:49 pm

Doctor who the adventure games were awesome I remember the dalek episode and getting stuck in a loop except the version I have doesn’t have the gun powder plot

  42. Marshmallow Doom on June 4, 2020 at 5:49 pm

I’m happy dr. Who is trying to make new cool vr games, but I really don’t like that the doctor is going to be Whittaker in all of them because she is the current one. Kinda ruins it.

  43. Alex Waterson on June 4, 2020 at 5:49 pm

Never even knew there was dr who games. I’m relatively new to the dr who fandom. Only ever watched some of the david tennant episodes but I was really young. Since jodie whittaker has been the dr, I have been watching. I can’t wait till it comes back on again.

  44. Robin McCormack on June 4, 2020 at 5:49 pm

I have yet to play any dr who video games, but that would be amazing if I really did.

I loved Dalek Attack. I had it on the Amiga and sometimes would just boot it up for the intro. I’ve still got my copy of Eternity Clock kicking around too

I think they could make a really good survival horror bassed arround the weaping angles

  49. John McHugh on June 4, 2020 at 5:57 pm

Ever since I first played Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind on the X-BOX back in the early 2000s, I determined that a similar game would work wonders with a Doctor Who theme. Playing Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim has only served to firm and confirm my opinion that if BBC and Bethesda got together, we’d have a truly workable and wonderful open world, open travel video game that is loyal to many of the concepts of Doctor Who (1963-2017) and allow a player to choose whether they wanted to be an evil Time Lord/Lady or a friend to the Doctor or a good Time Lord/Lady, with different attributes and abilities for each.

OK this might be super obscure but does anybody remember The Beginning or The Five Doctors games? They weren’t flash games because I remember having them downloaded and I guess they were fan made. In The Beginning you played through the Tribe of Gum (or that’s as far as I got) and in Five Doctors there were levels from Tomb of the Cybermen, Three Doctors and Genesis of the Daleks (from memory). You could sneak through Davros’s lab and get your foot caught in the clam and in the Tomb level I remember a soundbite from Troughton (the "they must be fought" clip) playing before the Cybermen were released. I can’t find anything online about these please help.
