Something a videogame eventually (not yet though) get right are smiles and faces while laughing. It’s just creepy wtf

The majority of these arent things devs can’t get right. We have solutions for all these things. But since we dont have infinite development time and working hours, theyre never a big enough payoff for the investment it would take, at least with current tech and techniques. I’m happy to ignore my character’s inability to drink convincingly if it means a lot more time went into refining the gameplay instead.

Naughty god games has none of that

We’re on a totally different level, but have to say that getting UK artist Sagui involved with the team was a great move for us. More proper designers in gaming!

About the thing with the water. The reason why Oceans are simpler to do than a glass of water is because most of the times the ocean is a plane object with an animated displacement map. To have realistic water flowing animation into and out of a glass would require realtime fluid simulation and simultaneous meshing of those particles. The mesh also mostly ends up being very high poly, so it is quite taxing on a system.

Video games could get all of them right, but then they would miss out on the free advertisement you and other youtubers would give them 😉

This was a really nitpicking video.

  9. Killian Anderson on November 20, 2019 at 9:03 pm

How about the gun holster. It’s always going into my characters body.

Great video, but you forgot a big one…how a character’s hair moves. Great example is any WWE game. Hair just glitches through a shoulder instead of breaking over it. Lol

The rule of three is a powerful thing. It’s used all the time in design, literature (three acts in a play), and religion (Catholic trinity, Christ being denied 3 times). Popular phrases (veni, vidi, vici… stop, drop, and roll) work in threes. It’s a pleasing number and geometric arrangement. Things look good in threes. Omne trium perfectum (Latin, "everything that comes in threes is perfect") is a useful phrase. That’s not to say everything HAS to be in threes, but if you have more than three phases of a boss battle it can get tiresome.

I’m too lazy to read through and see if anyone already called out jumping in elevators. Unless they’ve actually figured that out. I’m a couple years behind at the moment.

about the mirror thing, i remember the old game MDK2, in which when you enter the toilets, the mirrors are covered with tv static and a sign saying "your reflection is not available at this time -Management", i loved this

I think games just become more and more disappointing, and this has been going on for several years now.

  18. Brid Dodd on November 20, 2019 at 9:13 pm

The “rule of three” is repeated over and over again because that’s what looks good to the human eye. It’s for aesthetic purposes, I learned it while taking illustration classes.

Glitches are for BIT%HES. PLEASE ALL videos games, get rid of those damn glitches🎥🎮

  20. Crybaton on November 20, 2019 at 9:17 pm

Interestingly enough: Of all games, Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Breakpoints (I think) have perfectly solved Number 10. Everytime you get attacked/hurt/crash yout car/etc the conversation breaks up. Often the Ghost says sth along the lines of: "Hold on for a second!" And then picks up after the Action again where you stopped. It feels actually pretty natural.

Looking at the thumbnail reminds me how a lot of anime characters drink the same way: with a sort of grin instead of the normal way

  23. friendtendo on November 20, 2019 at 9:20 pm

liquid simulation is one of the absolute most intensive parts of cg. that shit’s not gonna work in real time for many, many years

  24. Kasumi Gaming on November 20, 2019 at 9:23 pm

7:07 because you’re supposed to be able to catch up to guards while walking. Also, Assassin’s Creed fixed the issue by Origins, synchronizing the speed of you and the NPC, both horseback and walking… BUT they have huge problem of cutting off dialogue there.

  25. Micah Maynard on November 20, 2019 at 9:24 pm

Every Assassins Creed fan knows about the rags on ledges for #1

Yeah but what about stairs to leg and feet proportions

  33. Aldor PeaceKeeper on November 20, 2019 at 9:32 pm

its hard to improve when every game is essentially a template using the same engine and vision, vision being $$$

“It must’ve been the wind” yeah must’ve been the wind *draws arrow*

  35. Nodalise Hill on November 20, 2019 at 9:32 pm

I was wondering some devs use slow walking NPCs as a sneaky way to load the game in the background?

I *really* hate borderlands 3 constantly giving you the solution when "exploring" during missions.

Also Duke nukem: look at my ass

  43. Jason Overman on November 20, 2019 at 9:45 pm

Rikkits from red dead redemption whom you meet in Mexico is one of the most annoying npcs I’ve come across for berating you during a quest. In his last mission for instance he nag you for not driving fast enough and to stop stopping even if he’s so far behind you that the mission insta fails for driving to far ahead of him. (of course this is also the guy that I’ve seen talk about how the townsfolk love him right before he drew his gun and shot his horse a few dozen times before he holsterd it and mounted the very same horse who somehow was still alive and we proceeded with the mission)

  44. LonttuGamer on November 20, 2019 at 9:46 pm

9:04 "GTA V had a great system where the you could never guess how an NPC would react to your actions."
They either run, fight you or call the cops. There’s not much guessing needed there, you’re talking bullshit.
    Other than that, solid video.

  45. Mark Mark on November 20, 2019 at 9:47 pm

Lot of computational power for mirrors….Are you kidding? It is the most basic, oldest calculation dated back decades. And mostly mirrors are in a small, prebaked room, there is no reason to not doing a proper mirror. But of course they wont make any problem reflecting the whole world on lakes or sea….since that doesnt take that much resource than a freakin mirror…

i literally thought hulk hogan was excited with pong

  47. Cavare Envius on November 20, 2019 at 9:49 pm

Thank god Valve doesn’t use the rule of 3……wait what?

  48. James Butterworth on November 20, 2019 at 9:49 pm

Don’t really agree with most things in this list.
However, NPCs are just too dumb at times and how the react can sometimes make a game very boring and not that fun to play in certain sections. I’m not saying a game has to be uber realistic, but they could do better

  49. W. Devarien on November 20, 2019 at 9:49 pm

The rule of three applies to everything. 3, 6, 9. Films, comedy, quests, everything.

  50. Daniel Skrivan on November 20, 2019 at 9:51 pm

    8:00 what game is that?
