I loved the video, excellent start 👍♥️
I disagree with what appears to be a fundamental assumption that you make. That if the particular details of history had been different, e.g. if Baer didn’t invent his brown box, things would be very different today. A lot of it just is inevitable; the idea is already in popular culture and it’s just a game of timing and execution.
Electromechanical games long pre-date Baer’s brown box, which is not a digital device; it’s simple analog electronics just like those electromechanical games and just like Tennis for two; just happens to hook up to a TV instead of lightbulbs, electromagnets, valves, motors etc. In many ways it’s simpler than a juke box or 1950’s era pinball machine.
Even before it was possible to commercialize the idea was already wide spread. Not just Tennis for two, but Space war! which was widely popular. As soon as it was remotely possible that it might be possible to commercialise, someone tried building it, and that was Baer. Tech wasn’t ready so he had to wait a few years for things to improve. He shot his load, and it turned out he was still too early. Atari waited a bit longer, improved the design and now you had Pong, which was just good enough to become a big hit. The patent system is why Baer wasn’t worse off.
Baers only invention of merrit was the cartridge.
I really love the soundtrack. Did you write it, or is it from some ancient DOS game in the vein of Dark Ages?
Looking forward to some history – I hope all your episodes keep this kind of feeling of being grounded in the year in question.
This is awesome! Gonna love this series! 😀
wow
I like the context behind these early creations… Good job. It’s also interesting to see the european perspective on early video game devices. (Sorry for my bad english, i’m french… Canada)
Ooooo, I dig the new intro!
Foarte interesanta aceasta serie, multumesc!
By the way that soundtrack on the back sounded like the guy who did the ost for KGB and dune.
Thank you sir. Neat old tech.
Holy hell, you’ve come a long way!
Mmmm… that exxos Dune music in the background
Awesome start for a new series! Will be watching this
This new series is amazing. Looking forward to next ones
and so it begins….
Would it even be possible to overstate the impact Ralph Baer made on video game development? He’s the grandfather of the video gaming industry.
