Why would anyone buy anything from a person who’s associated with 40 thieves?

Some further comments from my experience.

Part 1: sourcing in country. Price is the reason you source out of country. Good point that complex product is tricky to get from a non-English speaking place like China. Another point for "should you source at all in China" is about batch size. Setup costs, material and freight are all enemies of small batches.

Part 4: samples. Beware Chinese samples. You will often get a physical sample that is materially different from the production sample. Make sure your contract terms explicitly require the sample to be identical. This happens because some companies have "sample lines" which produce prototypes, and they "kinda" match those in full production. This is called "cha bu duo", which roughly translates to "not bad" or "near enough is good enough". You also may not be genuinely dealing with the manufacturer, but a trading company. This means they might send you a sample, but find a cheaper price for a similar but not identical product. So you get a good sample and then you are shipped cheap crap. Make sure of that contract!

Part 5: Securing your order. The contract terms are paramount, but bear in mind you are powerless if they decide to walk away. Unless you want to try to sue a Chinese company. Good luck with that. Now you might think their good name on the trade platform is worth something, but Chinese culture says that very often they will walk away from a loss even if that costs them your future business. What matters is what impacts them right now, not the promise of future benefit. It’s not universal, but it’s very, very common and the default expected outcome. The best route is to ensure your run of goods is inspected prior to dispatch. Don’t rely on pictures – that’s terrible advice. Pay and properly instruct a QA inspector. Select that inspector based on their sample reporting sent to others.

As for the risk of the manufacturer, get real testimonials from their existing customers. Also get real verification of the company and make sure they are substantial, and that you are really dealing directly with the manufacturer. Specify that outsourcing is not permissible. Your own QA on site actually ensures the product is made where they say it’s made. It also means that your staff supervises what actually gets loaded onto your trucks. Nothing goes missing, no factory seconds slip in to the batch.

Last point on this. There are a lot of scammers who simply pretend to be a factory. There are trading companies who will make listings but don’t have any genuine capacity to produce them, and effectively they are acting as a sourcing agent. They will source the product once you discuss it with them, so essentially you are briefing them. Communication is almost always wrong, they are all about volume and don’t care if the customer gets a poor result. For that reason, be very careful dealing with any Alibaba trader who has fewer than 3 years on the site. It’s very cost-effective to pay the premium account fee for one year and then rip off a few big fish and disappear with the profits. And not bad to pay it twice and have 2 years’ worth and some credibility. But nobody is paying for 3 fees just to get a crack at ripping off a customer in the end. So the scammers will almost never have an account that is 3+ years old. Just bear in mind that it’s not just scammers who can get you a terrible result – you still have to take care to avoid the other pitfalls.

I just wish there was an online manufacturers database for companies in the US and Canada like there is for China, it’s crazy how much more advanced they are when it comes to bulk manufacturing and wholesale batch sales. In the USA most companies that could compete with Alibaba suppliers don’t advertise and have to be contacted individually by TELEPHONE CALL. We haven’t made it out of the 1980’s and it’s killing us.

"customers" in our area get the same things that we would be buying wouldn’t they? By us buying direct from Ali we cut out the middle man, which is what the "capitalist system" is designed around. When we buy from Ali we know exactly what we want, what you’re talking about is buy technical gear, is it?
