British Plugs Are Better Than All Other Plugs, And Here's Why

http://tomscott.com – http://twitter.com/tomscott – ALL THE ELECTRICS I USED WERE UNPLUGGED. DO NOT DO THIS.

Yep, I’m going all patriotic again. And while I’m willing to bet that a good number of British folks know the first half of this video, there’s one thing about slack in here that I only just learned myself.

People in the UK have to do that, because they use 240v instead of 120v like the rest of the world. I was shocked several times as a kid by 120v and was fine, whereas 240v can kill you.

You had me till you mentioned stepping on it.

  3. LeonG on September 11, 2021 at 12:14 pm

Um,you showed the flaw.. its easy to put the plug in wrong.. australian is better.. just thin and deep slots

  4. joe mama on September 11, 2021 at 12:15 pm

the australian plug is really simmilar

Too much information, mate. Way too much information.

the EU tried like mad to get us and the irish to give up the three pin plug and failed. 🙂

  7. John Doe on September 11, 2021 at 12:19 pm

Irish plugs are the exact same

As much as this patriotic Yank hates to admit it; Respect!

  9. Tommy Laukkanen on September 11, 2021 at 12:20 pm

I remember learning to wire a plug in school… though I never had to do it after 😛 speakers for stereo systems still came with just wires that you’d clamp in holes on the back of the stereo system, though.

When I was about 6 years old I was playing with an extension cord and a small metal necklace. I almost got killed because I put it into one of the holes. This plug is really an excellent design.

  11. Eric Schickelgruber aus Linz on September 11, 2021 at 12:23 pm

Because they have spycam built in?

  12. LABscience on September 11, 2021 at 12:27 pm

It’s very well designed. But it isn’t compact enough.

  13. wedgism on September 11, 2021 at 12:29 pm

    Australian plugs are even safer

  14. Ryan Aun on September 11, 2021 at 12:29 pm

Who was working the camera, I don’t recognise that voice?

  15. CorporalCake on September 11, 2021 at 12:32 pm

I’ll humbly point out that you only need all these safety features because you have high voltage outlets. Getting shocked by 110V in North America is not really a big deal. 2 year-old me did that all the time and I’m fine.

  16. blanana_m on September 11, 2021 at 12:32 pm

I prefer the European plugs because they are pushed inwards a lot so no one can touch the contacts

  17. Cristina Alexe on September 11, 2021 at 12:32 pm

    Very interesting

  18. Michael Segal on September 11, 2021 at 12:32 pm

In Canada the same as America ground/earth is on the bottom or (at least it’s supposed to be) in America or Canada if the earth/ground is on the top it means someone installed the outlet upside down and I have seen that and it drives me completely INSANE when I see a plug outlet installed upside down with the ground/earth on the top instead of the bottom like it’s supposed to be

  19. Theme Master on September 11, 2021 at 12:35 pm

Is no one gonna talk about how other plugs are completely terrible? Like, they wear the socket out and hang off loosely?

  20. Kodah Smith on September 11, 2021 at 12:38 pm

I lived in Spain and I’ve lived in Kenya and in Kenya they’ve got the UK plugs and it’s honestly so much better than the standard EU plug

  21. James R Peet on September 11, 2021 at 12:38 pm

    Interesting

You what about the fact if it’s on the floor the prongs will face up so it will be like lego times 100 you can’t step on the prongs on us plugs granted they suck in almost every other way

  23. Milkman on September 11, 2021 at 12:47 pm

2 things the Brits are good at:

    -Plugs

    -Losing wars against rebel countrymen

  24. DsYkX on September 11, 2021 at 12:48 pm

    Singaporean plugs are equally good.
    Why? Because they are literally the same. ;-;

  25. procrafter 5000 on September 11, 2021 at 12:48 pm

I remember a few years ago, my grandpa made me a d my brother take apart plugs and rebuild them

Most popular video of yours and I got it 7 years later 👌🇬🇧✅

There’s a lot of cookie cutters back there

  28. MLennholm on September 11, 2021 at 12:52 pm

The Euro plug is better. It too has the insulation on all but the tips that ensures no live contact surface is ever exposed, same with everything you mentioned about the ground wire. It’s also reversible and way less bulky. A fuse in each individual plug is a complication that doesn’t increase safety when the only reason it exists is to compensate for the inherently less safe wiring of British houses. The Euro plug doesn’t need a fuse because European homes are wired safely to begin with, where no single circuit exceeds 10A, or 16A for certain high-power appliances.

  29. Henrik Thuresson on September 11, 2021 at 12:52 pm

Hmm. Have you seen a modern EU-plug?

  30. Nick Widzowski on September 11, 2021 at 12:53 pm

Came back to watch this again and it turns out there may be an even more miraculous invention in this video going under the radar – is that a magnetic spice rack in the background?!

  31. TheUselessTeammate on September 11, 2021 at 12:53 pm

"European sockets leave a part out"
European sockets, or at least msot of what I have seen including Germany uses Schuko (safety contact or protected contact however you interpret it) which actually has all of the plug go in not just the actual electrics so it is extra difficult to either get it out accidently or electrocute yourself

  32. Illidan Stormrage on September 11, 2021 at 12:54 pm

Correct me if I’m wrong, but everything you said is true for EU plug too, isn’t it?

  33. Shockwave on September 11, 2021 at 12:57 pm

To get electrocuted you need to have IQ above 130 in England.

  34. TheHexpert on September 11, 2021 at 12:57 pm

Best for electrical safety but worse for treading on in the middle of the night

  35. nuryuhanisa othman on September 11, 2021 at 12:57 pm

Malaysia using same plug with UK

  36. poopupupu on September 11, 2021 at 12:58 pm

British ain’t the best anymore, South Africa just made a new plug that works as 2 prong and 3 prong (2 prong for chargers and things)

  37. kNigo on September 11, 2021 at 1:00 pm

Here in Germany the things are also halfway insulated that isn’t really that special and also if it’s on the ground it doesn’t get pushed into your heels so I’d say it’s a tie

  38. Kenny XD on September 11, 2021 at 1:00 pm

Everyone saids it will hurt when you step on it, but who is dumb enough to leave plugs on the ground

  39. Bapt the Analog Kid — Bass covers with a twist! on September 11, 2021 at 1:00 pm

The fact that you plug it reverse and get the neutral and live naked it really a proof that the design is wrong. In France we can’t do that, and the plugs are recessed, so it’s harder for a kid to touch the live and neutral.

in Malaysia we used type G too

  43. Chase Calhoun on September 11, 2021 at 1:03 pm

    Oh that type of plug

  44. Arl Tratlo on September 11, 2021 at 1:04 pm

BS, i say the German ones are better… and there is no way to touch life contacts if you pull it out half way… so get your facts straight! let me guess, you never left your county, so why telling BS about other countries..

  45. Ollie Smith on September 11, 2021 at 1:05 pm

Australia has the same design except it’s curved so you can actually fit anything in there

  46. scolastico on September 11, 2021 at 1:06 pm

    Scheiss inselaffen… Schuko ist beste

  47. Greg McCall on September 11, 2021 at 1:07 pm

So why is it better than the AU/NZ plug? They have the shutters, are thinner, earth is on the bottom so last to come out if plug falls out due to gravity, has plastic around upper parts of pins in case of little fingers get around plug if it’s half plugged in. A fuse is not really a safety device as such. Better to have residual current devices (part of circuit breaker) for circuit. Fuses only protect cables from shorts and not people. The fuse just makes it a bulky plug with no real advantage as other systems do something better. So the assertion that British is better is I think wrong but at least patriotic. Re the length of the cable, again the AU/NZ have /hooks/loops to secure the cable to prevent it from being pulled out. Something the British don’t have.

  48. Gabriele Sustercic on September 11, 2021 at 1:07 pm

Sorry but I’m a fan of the French plug 😜

  49. Margo Schofield on September 11, 2021 at 1:07 pm

Not even gonna argue that. Fantastic design.
