Carrier "Deals" Are A Scam. Here's Why!

Carrier "Deals" Are A Scam. Here's Why!

David and David explain why most carrier “deals” are scams. Carriers regularly offer huge “discounts” on phones — but there’s almost always a catch. You typically have to sign up for a very, very expensive cell phone plan. When you factor in the cost of that plan, you really aren’t saving any money on the cell phone.

We did the math and found that you can save money in the long run by getting a prepaid cell phone plan and buying a phone directly from the manufacturer or a website like…

I realize it’s almost a year later; but bhphoto (I’m assuming what you mean when you say "B&H") the cheapest cell phone they have available today is $699, nowhere near $170.

These big carriers are ripping off Americans let alone the most boring cell phone market in the world

  5. Nick Oshana on April 16, 2022 at 3:12 pm

A sham either way. My Trac phone was $40.00 And Triple minutes on a $20.00 /60 minute card. So for $20.00 I get 3 hrs of Talk time. Verizon bought them out? No such thing as competition anymore.

I also setup a installment plan with AT&T

  7. SheliaL39 on April 16, 2022 at 3:14 pm

I use to get my phones straight from the carriers, I got a Samsung galaxy ultra 20 1 year and also a month ago, I’m with AT&T, so I got to purchase it from AT&T

  8. timhershel on April 16, 2022 at 3:14 pm

You also didn’t mention that many times the phones come locked so if you travel overseas you can’t use any sim you want and you have to pay a pointless activation fee!

when i see the prices in Canada or USA of cell plans ( with data caps lol ) i cannot believe how much people are scammed , i mean in France i pay 9,99 per month for unlimited cellular data since like 5 years now ( it was 19 Before ) on 4G and since Iphone 12 launch i’m on 5G all the time , unlimited calls to 60 countries + text ect… and same for optic fiber we never had data caps for home internet when DSL started and most people pay between 20 to 40 euros per month for a set up box that can do lots of things. you guys are scammed by these carriers it’s ridiculous and the service quality doesn’t seem to be very great when u are in isolated areas too…

What you think about the T-mobile plans for iPhones on them?

  17. B H on April 16, 2022 at 3:32 pm

You just made me feel a whole lot better! After we bought our phones and got the pre-paid plan, Verizon came out with this deal. I knew deep down that our plan was better but after hearing this advertised, time after time, I would wondered if we really had the better deal. Now I know for sure it is. Of course, I was being lazy in not doing the numbers to check things out. I never changed from what we have, so I guess I knew for sure it was best! Thank you for all the help you give on buying iPhones and deciding which plan is best for you. 😊❤️

    You guys are really awesome!

  19. Luke Milner on April 16, 2022 at 3:35 pm

Ok, T-Mobile isn’t a lie at all. The way it works is that you agree to 24 months with no minimum plan type. If you leave early you pay off the rest of the phone so say you stay 1 year and the phones $300 you pay the remaining $150 and you’re free to go with the phone! If you’re content after 2 years you can leave and the phone is yours! Especially on essentials 55+ and 27.50 a person for 2 lines? What could be better?

  20. Vu Nguyen on April 16, 2022 at 3:38 pm

Thanks guys for pointing out the "scam". I’m hoping to see more deal videos like what we can do to get a good deal after knowing how to avoid these lame deals…. For example, Verizon has the BYOD deal where it gives $500 for a new line with 1 year "contract". With a family plan of 5 (i do autopay and paperless billing, it seems like a good deal. How about Costco $300 for each new line added/ported to Tmobile. Thanks again for great video ❤️❤️❤️

  21. Blue Waters on April 16, 2022 at 3:39 pm

Another suggestion and it is what I do is get a Best Buy credit card. Buy your phone on their Christmas 18 month free interest plan if you pay it off at the end of the 18 months. I buy all my electronics then and have never paid interest ever since 2008. Christmas or Black Friday is the time to buy electronics. Lots of sales also.

  22. Suzette6796 on April 16, 2022 at 3:39 pm

    How about through Costco?

  23. WorldOfMusic on April 16, 2022 at 3:39 pm

hmm this video feels like that Rick and Morty episode where the devil sets up a store with cursed items that seem good but have horrible side effects, and then Rick comes along and reveals the "scam" of these items.. XD

  24. szargos on April 16, 2022 at 3:42 pm

So the only way you save is by getting a phone AND a prepaid plan, right? What if I don’t want a prepaid plan? Either way I plan to get the back end plan for $60 a month, then getting a phone that’s $800 off is a better deal than paying full price for it, no??

"Don’t buy a phone from your carrier, buy it from a prepaid service instead."
My carrier IS a prepaid service. What do I do now?

"Math doesn’t lie, but it can greatly increase obfuscation." Thank you for pointing out this immorality.

  31. Mikey Slice on April 16, 2022 at 3:47 pm

What about the $800 off the iPhone 13 deal at AT&T though?

  32. Kyle Koala on April 16, 2022 at 3:47 pm

Also, the $80.00 or $70.00 postpaid plans are what you have to get if you want Apple Watch Cellular linked. Which is not most people, but unfortunately that’s me. 😭

  33. DickHed 908 on April 16, 2022 at 3:48 pm

I already bought 2 iPhones from my carrier🥲

  34. Nonya Bizwax on April 16, 2022 at 3:51 pm

You forgot the upgrade fee for just being able to buy the phone. That’s why I don’t get it from the carrier

  35. iwbasl on April 16, 2022 at 3:51 pm

don’t buy a phone from Verizon and don’t trust anything the people in these stores say, EVER ! I’ve been burnt twice.

  36. Jim Flagg on April 16, 2022 at 3:52 pm

Phones are an out right scams. The problem is most people don’t have the disposable cash to spend so they go for the plans so they can just make payments.

Avg user 3-6 gb a month? I call bs lmao. The way streaming videos and how phones are used in today time you will eat through them gb in no time. I have wifi and I go through over a 1000gb a month. Streaming high def movies. Downloading updated to my phone and downloading new apps. I just don’t know how you guys can sit here and say that people only use so little data each month? If I didn’t have wifi and I had to stream Netflix, paramount+,Hulu,YouTube, all my other streaming services. I would go well over 1-200gb a month. I don’t think you guys understand how much data is gone through when using these phones

  41. Daniel Plakosh on April 16, 2022 at 3:56 pm

Need a video for people covering the scam of trading in phones. It is actually a scam. I was gotten by this a couple months ago when switching services. I was going to keep my iPhone from Verizon when switching to AT&T. They told me they would give me $800 for the phone if I traded it in. I figured the phone was not worth that much and bit. Now I have $800 of credits on my account instead of actually having the money applied to the value of my phone, and cant change phones for 2.5 years without losing the credits. This is truly a scam.

  42. Scott Earl on April 16, 2022 at 3:57 pm

I always buy the phone . This time iPhone 12 128 gb and went with visible for unlimited for $ 25 a month

  43. Tonto Schwartz on April 16, 2022 at 3:57 pm

Well I guess a walked into that one. Verizon plan, upgraded iPhone 7s to 12s, unlimited data and 128 memory. Seemed great at the time. Dang. Costs me twice what I was paying before. I will definitely take this advice with our next phones. Thanks guys.

  44. Kyle Shebilske on April 16, 2022 at 3:59 pm

Dosen’t this become more affordable if your plan has like 3 phone’s on it as its much cheaper for every phone you add?

  45. chad O on April 16, 2022 at 3:59 pm

What about AT&T’s military/first responder/ teacher 25% discount? I currently have prepaid with an older iPhone XR and have followed your method my entire life. but I’m debating on switching to contract. It’s $56 a month for the contract and IPhone 13 is $0 with it. I pay about $58 prepaid ( would be less but I have about 10gb of data I believe) is the contract a good deal?

  46. no body on April 16, 2022 at 4:00 pm

I am the same person who gets stiffed by car sales persons. Yes I already bought my phone through my carrier, but am just about to buy a new phone for my mother-in-law, so tthiis is a big help. Thanks guys!!

  50. Carl Hogg on April 16, 2022 at 4:02 pm

I just did the math on the current AT&T deal which is to turn in my Iphone XS which I have on a $25 month prepaid plan, and get $800 off of the Iphone 13 Pro IF I switched to a qualifying plan – a plan that has the exact same specs as the prepaid plan and is $60 instead of $25. I made a spreadsheet to compare the two options. and given my purchase price of $400 for the used XS, the difference over the 36 month contract is almost $900 more than if I were to just keep my current phone. That is almost the cost of buying the phone outright!! If I sold my phone and bought the 13 Pro outright, I would get a better deal AND not be bound to a 3 year commitment. The proof is in the pudding, as they say.
