DIY How to Cut Electric Bill in Half: Part 3 Clothes Dryer Free Ideas | Missouri Wind and Solar

This video shows you how to heat your home using wasted heat. See our follow-up video: https://youtu.be/M2ml3hRLnRI

*DISCLAIMER: This should only be done with an electric dryer. A gas dryer will release toxic carbon monoxide into your home.

The humidity level in your home should be 55 to 60 percent. If your humidity in the winter months is lower then that then the lint bucket will help to bring that humidity level up. If where you live the humidity is already higher then 60 percent in the winter months then this bucket will not work for you.
There has never been any MOLD issue since people have been using this type of lint bucket since the 1980’s.

The only problem is: the lint dust and vapors are quite harmful when inhaled! . . . Seriously don’t do it like this!

    Cough.

Yeah, but who is doing loads and loads of laundry everyday.

Not a good idea. I tried this. (similar trick with pantyhose and no water catch) I found moisture damage and small icecicles on the underside of my roof deck in the attic. Adding too much moisture into your home can actually do damage.

Hi! I love it! I am planing to move my washer and dry machine to the garage. You mention it can be use in the winter. Isn’t for use for other season in the year? I live in Houston, TX; its will not work?

  9. K Schrader on June 16, 2022 at 3:19 am

I would be very hesitant on this. Dryer exhaust is fast-moving air and it’s hard to imagine that just having water in the bottom of the bucket will catch all the lint. I’d have to see it to believe it.

  10. Luke Warmwater on June 16, 2022 at 3:22 am

dammit!!…. the heater element in my dryer just went out too!…
wait. if I set a space heater in front of it and do this…. oh hell yes!! sweet! nice video!

  11. Teresa James on June 16, 2022 at 3:22 am

How do you realistically use this great dryer exhaust system when you don’t have an entire room open like you show in the video? Can you put it on top of the dryer? My washer & dryer are side by side in a closet-like area in an apartment.

  13. Aaron Erskine on June 16, 2022 at 3:23 am

another pro tip is to also attach the drain line for the washing machine into the bucket so you can save the water that comes out from it.

How often does one use a dryer and how about the summer. Blowing lent in your home

HOW TO CUT YOUR ELECTRIC BILL EVEN FURTHER!!! CYCLE THE MAIN BREAKER. You heard me, if you can, shut it off. Get a bunch of ice packs for your freezer, which keep your food cold up to 7 days, I’ve done this before. My average bill was $20.00 a Month. Take what you will and THINK FOR YOURSELF on the advise I just gave you. It is NOT ILLEGAL to shut your main breaker off, the meter people would come and try to figure out what I was doing, my answer was I am away alot and didn’t want the electric on, TO PAY YOU.

  16. Brian on June 16, 2022 at 3:26 am

Very bad idea. The air coming out of a dryer is not healthy unless you’re using a very clean laundry soap. 99% of laundry soaps on the market have synthetic chemicals that you don’t want to breathe in, hence we exhaust this air outside.

  17. shawn jackett on June 16, 2022 at 3:27 am

That catches all the lint particles? Just not worried about that?

  18. KCARPS Pops on June 16, 2022 at 3:27 am

    Awesome

  19. Fredlem Paaluhi on June 16, 2022 at 3:29 am

Wow, thanks so much for this video. I’ll be making this today. I don’t need the humidity as I live in Hawaii. My dryer vent isn’t connected so when I’m using the dryer, the lint flies everywhere and I keep having to sweep and wipe down things. This will surely help 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

  20. Josett Penrod on June 16, 2022 at 3:31 am

Hell all I need is the ring for the bucket

  21. hillary clinton on June 16, 2022 at 3:31 am

You do not want any of the air to come into the house.. I have a 4 inch outlet dryer that instead dumps into a bucket like yours AFTER travelling through dozens of feet of 6 inch metal pipe artfully running back and forth on the wall. A drain on the lowest spot and a dehumidifier to capture the last of the moisture round out the picture.

  22. Friedrich Von Eichel on June 16, 2022 at 3:32 am

Actually you can vent the gas dryer into the house, that is the ultimate money saver, because suddenly all your bills don’t matters

  23. Bob D. on June 16, 2022 at 3:33 am

01:08 So a larger version of something that is in your words *"just junk, okay, they don’t work"* is somehow better?

  24. Doug B on June 16, 2022 at 3:34 am

Pair of panty hose on end of pipe works well.

    With Scissors.

  27. N Valles on June 16, 2022 at 3:36 am

Wow! Every year for the last twelve years I’ve undone the hose come winter to heat the house. Usually we run laundry at night. It does raise the humidity and I didn’t realize that was the key. Anyways, it was heat that should go into the house and not outside in my mind.

  28. David Hamilton on June 16, 2022 at 3:37 am

I did this for a while then got one of the low profile ones. It sits on a shelf. Great idea though buy a hygrometer to see what it does to indoor humidity.

  29. Bob C. on June 16, 2022 at 3:37 am

You can already buy something, that will direct the hot air into the house. And it’s cheaper.

  30. The Hatebringer on June 16, 2022 at 3:37 am

you know you can cut you bill in half with a pair of scissors also =)

  31. Brad M on June 16, 2022 at 3:38 am

Nothing like loading your home with excessive moisture.🤦‍♂️

  32. Stephen Dueck on June 16, 2022 at 3:38 am

The problem here is that the air from the dryer is full of moisture…you are just pumping damp air into the house.

  33. Trust Me on June 16, 2022 at 3:38 am

Just what I need, 85% humidity condensating and freezing on all my windows and rotting them. Then comes the mold.
These silly and harmful dryer ideas were dismissed in the ’70s.

How to cut your electric bill 100% ; install a solar powered clothes dryer … I have a neighbor down the street that has an over 10,000 Watt array of solar panels …. he uses a kilowatt or so of that electrical power every day to run an electric clothes dryer … considering he got ripped off on this system and the loss of income from not selling excess electrical power back the utility … his electric clothes dryer costs him well over $10,000.00 Want humidity in your home? Dry clothes indoors is ONE of numerous ways to add humidity ….

  36. Joanne Marriott on June 16, 2022 at 3:40 am

thanks, I will try it. so glad I found your site!

  37. Uncle Dad on June 16, 2022 at 3:42 am

No, absolutely don’t vent your dryer indoors. I know somebody who did this and their house molded so badly they had to gut it right to the studs.

  39. Bill Hale on June 16, 2022 at 3:46 am

I just would like to mention that using a step drill is much easier than using a spade bit for the holes in the lid so if you have step drill use them instead

  40. Michael Sangiovanni on June 16, 2022 at 3:47 am

Thank God you said what you said in the beginning of the video to not use this with a gas dryer because I can only imagine dip shits that would actually try this with something that combusts in the house. They already do stupid stuff with gas oven’s. Yes! Airflow airflow airflow! Or your down for a stupid 5 bucks in parts. Thermal fuse will blow and typically whirlpool/ Maytag/Amana will give you the sign of drum spin with no heat but some don’t start at all. I think GE stays off.

  41. Cal Staples on June 16, 2022 at 3:50 am

If you use dryer sheets to soften your clothes, I’d recommend not doing this as you will put a lot of chemicals into your indoor air.

  42. George A. on June 16, 2022 at 3:50 am

Cut your electric bill in half?
I think you mean use your furnace in half.
What you save in pumping the furnace, you more than make up with the dryer. Unless you dry clothes everyday for two hours or so
