Episode 1 – Electrical Testers and Multi-meters (Electricians' Test Equipment)

Episode 1 – Electrical Testers and Multi-meters (Electricians' Test Equipment)

This episode goes over the many different types of electrical test-equipment that we use out in the field. There are many more brands and types out there, but this is a good place to start if you’re getting into the electrical trade and are wondering which tester you should buy.

Please let me know if you have any other suggestions, or if you think there are any different brands/equipment that should be on this list.

Thank you for watching, please subscribe and let let me know if there are any instructional videos you’d like to see done.

One nice thing about the very rugged & versatile Fluke t100 tester ( u opening for current measurements aling with volt & ohmeter) you can take one of the test probes off and install an alligator clip.

  8. PhamousGreyWolf on July 21, 2020 at 7:56 pm

This is where it began….if anyone is backchecking $hit.

You obviously dont know how to use it properly, or dont understand how induction/electricity works….pfftt..master electrician..my a$$.

  9. jarry Dee on July 21, 2020 at 7:56 pm

The only use for those little tic testers is to freak out new guys. Standing on a ladder (your not grounded) and holding a hot wire in one hand, and the tester in the other, it goes off… I DO NOT recommend trying this. Still is funny to watch their face.

  10. Austin Hedman on July 21, 2020 at 7:57 pm

Everyone at my company uses those non contact testers for years, and none of them have any negative opinions on them. Is it possible some are just bad testers? Or have all of us gotten lucky not getting hurt yet?

  11. Al Run on July 21, 2020 at 8:00 pm

That fluke multimeter it’s like my tietzsch that GE gave me but the tietzsch automatically reads without setting it phase, continuity, and up to 1.2kAC/ 1.5kDC

  12. MAINTENANCE MAN on July 21, 2020 at 8:02 pm

My Fluke chicken stick hasn’t lied to me yet. I never had a problem with my Fluke non-contact. And I call it the chicken stick.

  13. Jesse Hickman on July 21, 2020 at 8:03 pm

Non contact voltage tester ie: idiot tester-
I work on live power at least half the time as a service electrician and my approach to electricity is the same as a gun. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ASSUME ITS LIVE and/or Loaded.
For NCVT’s: Klein ones are absolute garbage. Santronics and amp probe make reliable light up NCVT’s that don’t beep. But haven’t failed me as long as batteries are good.
I personally use my idiot tester as often as my fluke t5-1000. Plus a green lee gfi tester and the fluke toner.
I bought 5 Klein’s in my first 4 years as apprentice and I got lit often enough to understand why it’s called an idiot tester, they were finicky as fuck.
I agree fluke t5 is by far the best tester to own.

Good advice about the meters, but too bad about the foul language- a deal killer

So, found your channel tonight, watched #3 decided to go back and start at #1. Subscribed to both channels and liked on FB. I’m not an electrician but I want to understand it better. I will have a question for you down the road about a half assed light switch set up in our house down the road, just want to watch and learn for now!

What about voltage testers dealing or circuit breaker Finders or circuit analyzers

  19. Jack Mehoff on July 21, 2020 at 8:07 pm

    this channel is a gem

  20. sixteenornumber on July 21, 2020 at 8:07 pm

The non-contact voltage tester also works for identifying Ethernet cables. Of course it also gets crosstalk between cables giving occasional false positives.

  21. William Haines on July 21, 2020 at 8:08 pm

The non contact is only to get a gueestamit You confirm it with a volt meter of some sort . When you dealing with nub and tube where the nearest neutral is several feet away a volt meter is not the greatest idea and plumbing can not be used as reference point since there might be a break in the plumbing or plastic pipe

One of the tools I use often for computer repair. I’m starting to think that the thing I actually like about computer repair is this… Maybe I need to go to school and change professions. 32 with a baby on the way and thinking about a new career ROFL…

  23. lloyd oconnor on July 21, 2020 at 8:10 pm

Didn’t hear you mention the Circuit Breaker Finder, which is very useful in some circumstances.

  24. MiggyAL9 on July 21, 2020 at 8:11 pm

I have that same non-contact voltage tester, thanks for the info! I’m working with a licesened electrician this weekend and he said he’d give me one of those fancy ones in this video!

  25. julian balcikonis on July 21, 2020 at 8:12 pm

The voltage pen/stick is just a voltage indicator. You are right they do lie to you. I use a fluke one. some are too sensitive and will show live when the the circuit is next to or in the board with a live ciircuit. I dont like the the Klein one personally.

  26. José Arturo G on July 21, 2020 at 8:13 pm

Thanks bro. I’m starting on this world of electrician an appreciate so much your dedication for this videos. God bless you

  27. Anonymous Hunter on July 21, 2020 at 8:13 pm

Can you start a apprenticeship when your 18? If you can I’m going to do it then. It will be cool to do and I love electric stuff normally.

  28. Tom Garbo on July 21, 2020 at 8:14 pm

Not a Plug tester but a receptacle tester. Please use right terms. Used a contact tester for last 25 years with no problems. On long conduit runs with circuit be test off you often get a false positve due to transformation. Energized conductors will induce a small voltage in other conductors. With any tester must test piece of equipment use it then retest it. Correct about Fluke. They are the best. Used a fluke VOM/Megger for over 10 years at least a hundred times a week PMing drives & troubleshooting.

  29. Tom Garbo on July 21, 2020 at 8:17 pm

Never use or buy any test equipment from scum bag cheating subpar made in comunist china. Your life is not worth it.

  30. Alfonso Castro on July 21, 2020 at 8:18 pm

What books are on your table ? I would love to know, brand new to the channel!

  31. David Brewer on July 21, 2020 at 8:18 pm

Let me correct you here. A "Megger" is an insulation resistance tester which uses a test voltage which is much higher than a standard resistance or continuity check in a multimeter which typically tests with only around 3 to 9 volts DC. When you test the insulation (the resistance between an exposed conductive surface & an intentionally live conductor) using a Megger, it is important to do this test at a much higher voltage of typically 500Vdc or 1000 Vdc. This is because you may determine insulation integrity is good using a low voltage test but the arcing effect of a higher voltage (typically between 1.5x & 5 x the normal supply voltage) when it can jump for example via a tiny pin prick in an insulating layer.

  32. Keith C on July 21, 2020 at 8:20 pm

Of course, isn’t there always the possibility that your " big boy meter" ‘s probe will not make a sound connection to the hot wire, which will also indicate that the circuit is dead, when it may not be, then you will be?

I’ve noticed that he kinda cover’s this later. But all meters including the touch pen all have their problems.

  33. ALDY 304 on July 21, 2020 at 8:20 pm

Love the videos dude keep em up

  34. Matt E on July 21, 2020 at 8:20 pm

    Good info…
I’m brand new to all this stuff. Genuine opinions are what I’m looking for. Anything else is a gimmick. I’ll keep watching👍

  38. Starfish on July 21, 2020 at 8:23 pm

I can’t thank you enough telling about no contact tester pen
I just looked at it on Amazon, almost bough 2 for my young men
I know very little about electricty , I am terrified of it .
I hope you can make videos for very young men to keep them safe around electricity .They need to learn basic skills .
I appreciate a feed back if you have time.

  39. Ed Oboukhov on July 21, 2020 at 8:24 pm

I know I’ll come off as a wimp, but how dangerous is your job? How often do you get shocked? How painful is it? Is it something that can be prevented just by following basic safety rules or are you still likely to have something happen to you? I’m sick of office work and have been considering the trades. I feel like white collar jobs are mostly about faking everything and making as many connections as possible to open doors for yourself and then slamming them shut on everyone else. I’d like a job where I learn something practical and can take pride in my work. Anyway, electrical sounds interesting, but just wanted to know how dangerous it is beforehand. Thanks!

  40. Michael Kasm on July 21, 2020 at 8:25 pm

first thing you need to do before you do anything "ALWAYS TEST YOUR TESTER "

  41. SAM BUZZ on July 21, 2020 at 8:26 pm

    Enjoying the vids mate 👍

  42. The Ink Build Up on July 21, 2020 at 8:29 pm

Awesome, this video is a big help. I want to learn electrician skills and this helped me know what testers i should look into. Also, I saw you have books back there, can you recommend some good ones?

    flukes wiggys the best

  44. Michael Jackson on July 21, 2020 at 8:30 pm

Why dont you have a fluke 87v? I’m baffled

  45. Roy Luckadoo on July 21, 2020 at 8:33 pm

Wow seriously? ? The LANGUAGE is a direct turn off in my opinion. Totally uncalled for! Not everyone cares to hear it. Just sayin..

  46. John Robson on July 21, 2020 at 8:34 pm

9:00 – You can glue the removable leads.

  47. Richard Todd on July 21, 2020 at 8:39 pm

Not sure why you must use foul language. Your videos are good except for that. Thanks

  48. alohajason on July 21, 2020 at 8:40 pm

FYI: with the toner on low voltage twisted pair like cat 5 I’ve learned not to use it on just one twisted pair. Use a strand from two twisted pairs.. otherwise the tone will cancel and be really weak

  49. Eric Whitfield on July 21, 2020 at 8:42 pm

    Great video thank you

  50. MrxBIGxBADxWOLF on July 21, 2020 at 8:44 pm

Klein volt tester is great. Light easy to carry and doesn’t take up space in your bags. Anyone who doesn’t treat a circuit as hot will get hurt. No matter what tester you use. Enjoy your videos but gotta disagree on you telling me they suck. Their main point is to let you know if a grounded, ungrounded and grounding conductor is live somewhere in that circuit. Could talk more rather not. Be safe out their peeps
