The AI reacting to the player coming in with a god damn minigun reminds me of Fallout 4….at one point.
See, i ran in with a minigun into a Raider camp, and one of the yelled out "oh fuck! that’s a minigun!" i cannot recall them Ever saying that again, either about the minigun or any other large weapon, like a Fatman or a rocketlauncher, but still.

  8. CalgarGTX on August 2, 2020 at 8:50 pm

I played the entire game without using the slomo, probably because I couldn’t find a way to remap it to a proper key

    Excellent Iron Giant reference. Superb.

About the random jumpscares, i remember one scene in FEAR where you are climbing up a very long ladder and everything seems fine and you get to the top and Alma (the little girl) is standing right in your face, i jump out of my seat every time.

The team work and aggression of your enemies were very good challenges. Unlike Bethesda’s "my ears must be playing tricks on me" cop-out the NPCs adopt to avoid combat. Unrealistic. Unbelievable. Not fun.

  14. 7graywolf7 on August 2, 2020 at 8:58 pm

So this is the review that finally convinced me to get the game and try it. I gotta say, nice combat levels. However the AI is extremely basic: That part where the shelf falls over and the guy crawls under it? I tested it many times. It’s a script. The ai flanking around you? They are programmed to take those paths specifically. Usually they just run straight at you like any other shooter game. The only variety to their strategy is that they seem to be able to use cover but even then it appears that they are simply told to do it by the level designers, not because the AI decided on its own that this was the right choice to make.

Play through the same rooms taking different paths, weapons, and strategies each time you do and you will notice the AI has very little to no deviation in how they handle your presence.

The revolution that all the replicants are female and your explanation of the plot regarding them was simply the best thing I’ve ever seen on Youtube. Well done dude!

  16. lalo on August 2, 2020 at 8:58 pm

"The level designer and the AI designer were probably holding hands the entire time"
Something that clearly didnt happen in Half Life 2 and because of that some people think that the Combine Soldiers AI is from braindead to average

  17. SunBreaker Films on August 2, 2020 at 8:58 pm

holy fuck dude learn to intonate differently. I thought I was having a stroke, every sentence has like the same number of words, same number of adjectives, and the exact same intonation and rythm for a full 25 minutes. It’s actually impressive, i couldn’t do that if i tried. Made me want to clay my eardrums out though

  18. Junk Phu on August 2, 2020 at 8:59 pm

This was the game that got me into horror games when I first went to college. And yeah the controls feel awkward, but dammit you were a god when you got a hang of it.

For some fuckin reason Charlatan likes Perseus Mandate and dislikes Point Extraction….
I like you and him, Mandy, but idk who is fuckin bonked in the head after this. Is Charlatan weirid or you and Jarek are wrong… (Democracy says otherwise)

F.E.A.R. is amazing. Still great today.

  23. Nicholas Muncie on August 2, 2020 at 9:12 pm

This ai is good, but I’d argue the AI for the alien in alien isolation is better

This was back when Monolith made awesome games.

  27. Vahlok on August 2, 2020 at 9:15 pm

Jango Fett and his friends (clone troopers) that killed me

  28. RatedRaven on August 2, 2020 at 9:15 pm

TL:DR i just wish there’d be spinoff games that plays around a different F.E.A.R. squad on a different first encounters.
I think there is potential in a lot of otherworldly games in the title of F.E.A.R. , I can easily imagine a whole new game that has a vastly different story from this one which is simply a story of a different squad on a different mission,, and to keep the slow-mo mechanic, the F.E.A.R. group made it necessary for say, squad leaders to have heightened reflexes so they do some operation on them. The acronym just has a lot of potential to be a semi-realistic fictional shooter.

  29. PERSON FACE on August 2, 2020 at 9:16 pm

i feel like fighting the security guards makes the game feel less real. if they were working with you, it would feel like your part of a large group trying to stop the replicas instead of a game coming up with more enemy types

  30. Zed on August 2, 2020 at 9:16 pm

"The Pointman" is probably the most badass fucking name for a protagonist I’ve ever heard.

  31. A Foi Production on August 2, 2020 at 9:17 pm

This is one game that was somewhat influenced by the original half life with how the soldiers act in that game. monolith made the ai seem really good by using the same technique valve did with hl1’s marines. There aren’t a lot of notable examples of hl1’s influence but this is technically one of them

  32. Bush Turkey on August 2, 2020 at 9:18 pm

Don’t forget the game would try to unnerve you before jumping you with a ambush.

  33. Rex Galilae on August 2, 2020 at 9:18 pm

Btw, the game’s for dirt cheap on steam right now

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/21090/FEAR/

    Includes the complete pack

Jesus Mandalore, you’re supposed to be the family friendly one!

  36. DarkR27 on August 2, 2020 at 9:23 pm

Another thing about the Ai I found to be really good in this game was their response to certain acts you’d do catching them off guard. Like if you run shooting crazy or jumping like a mad man they panic some bolt backwards or they say he’s too fast etc. Also they’ll run backwards shooting blindly if you run at them like you have nothing to lose always find this AI to be life like I miss it. The gunplay never came back from most games I play with all the particle stuff and sounds.

Steam only sells the ENTIRE TRILOGY of games as one package now. You can’t buy the 1st game +expansions standalone anymore, which sucks.

Unironically one of the best shooters of the decade.

    Ralph like this game:)

  43. Robert R on August 2, 2020 at 9:31 pm

Having now played Extraction Point and been immensely disappointed, I can see plenty of reasons to make it non-canon (not that FEAR 2 & 3 are an improvement but still). I wouldn’t call this "FEAR Crusader"; I’d call it "FEAR Blue Shift".
    – Maybe they don’t want Paxton Fettel to return out of nowhere mere hours after his death saying, "this makes no sense but nothing does anymore, lol!"
    – Maybe they don’t want Alma to have split personalities and child/adult Alma to be retconned into her good/evil halves, respectively. Maybe they don’t want a pseudo-profound scene in which these two halves merge, symbolising absolutely nothing because neither actually represents anything of relevance to the game.
    – Maybe they don’t want Fettel spouting lines about Point Man’s role and mysteries he’s yet to grasp, which don’t actually come up in the game and clearly hadn’t actually been thought up yet.
    – Maybe they don’t want their protagonist to spend an instalment wandering around aimlessly with no goal except "get out" (like Blue Shift, if it had starred Gordon Freeman).
    – Maybe they don’t want a cliffhanger about a great war coming in which one side has no motivation and the other side is completely nebulous.

I remember playing the office building level, with enemies crawling over the walls and on the ceiling, and thinking that they really messed up the atmosphere in that place – everything was brigtly lit, and the dark enemies stood out clearly over the white walls, so there was no tension. But when I came back to the game on the next day, it turned out that somehow ALL LIGHTING BUGGED OUT on the night before, and small moody desklight were blasting with the power of the sun – now that I restarted the game, the place was pitch black and scary as hell. I’m kinda glad it bugged the first way through, because I was a big wuss, and that level was chock-full of jumpscares.

  47. Arctopus on August 2, 2020 at 9:35 pm

FEAR’s AI was a talking point because… well… other games have done it better. But FEAR did it FIRST. After years of FPS with pretty standard AI, I still distinctly remember the first squad of enemies I came across in FEAR. I used the tactics I’d learned from other games. I got into cover. I stepped out of cover, knowing that the enemies would be poking their heads above boxes waiting for me to do so, and I just had to be faster than them. Except… they weren’t. I moved forward, wondering if I’d found a bug, and holy fuck they’re behind me, they flanked me as a squad because I’d assumed they’d act in the same normal corridor shooter manner as most previous FPS I’d played. They didn’t have their preassigned piece of cover to hide behind and they were pretty damn lethal when they caught you unawares.
