And a good day to you, sir!

Polio always makes me think of that hellish game of mounted croquet played by people of old money families that have names consisting of four or more middle names and two or three last names connected via hyphens type of rich. And for such a outwardly physically demanding sport I’m surprised at how old some of these guys can be while still being decent opponents to other men of half their age. Only other sport I can think of that is similar in nature to physical demands and where you still see grey haired banking executives wiping the floor with younger opponents is squash. A game I’ve always wanted to try but haven’t had any proper experience with. And trying to play in an open gym instead of a squash court with it’s finite space and therefore spending more time warming the ball up properly so it stands a chance of bouncing properly without ligament ripping swings to return a serve and start a volley going before one of us has to run to the opposite end of the gym after missing a return. Considering how quickly bounces drop height into a pea roller and speed of travel I didn’t play for long those couple times I did attempt to learn. It requires significant force to make the ball bounce high enough and due to that force being needed the velocity of that hard rubber ball with the hole in it and red spot is truly significant in making for a game that requires cat like reflexes and endurance coupled with strong tendons and ligaments to mitigate risk of serous sprains or tears to muscles and stringy bits alike and what looks to be a young man’s game has so many older player’s. Whose ranks consist of the older guys that have climbed to the top and those trying to follow in their footsteps. It’s a serious boost for your ego to become a decent player and to play effectively even when wrinkles and grey hair have been accepted and have been built into your personality as an asset rather a detriment. And if how destroyed sweating exhausted looks are of those younger guys and their older counterparts look and it’s not a case of letting the boss win in most cases. And any serious squash player would be insulted by an opponent throwing a game. But I digress and halt my tangent rant. I’m not editing for grammar or readability as well as talking to myself via a comment. I haven’t the life left in me to live to add to what I’ve wasted already let alone shit I forgot where I was going with that ending oh well. Quickly to the Bat Cave Robin

My dad had polio when he was a kid. He learned to tie his shoes with one hand… among other things. He never let anything slow him down.

I’m just going to put this line of thinking out there, I’m not suggesting that any certain perspective is more "logical" or sensible or compassionate than the other, so relax already.
Is this worth living thru? Are we, in a way, creating far more suffering by creating medicines and mechanisms that keep us alive when we otherwise would have perished?
This question isn’t just reserved for Polio, but ALL medical scenarios in which a human being has no real quality of life, but is otherwise trapped in their body due to "medical advancements".
I’m just curious what people think. Clearly I’m not advocating that some third party should be making the decision for someone else. Rather, maybe pursuing ways of staying certain diseases progress isn’t actually a real gift to the patient.
That millionaire automaker who donated $95 million worth of medical equipment (Iron Lungs specifically), his heart was in the right place, but maybe that colossal amount of dough should have been spent on vaccine research, or some other aspect of the medical world.
These are just questions, not suggestions, so again, relax LOL…. I’m human, I want to live, if offered an Iron Lung I would have taken it, if my child needed it, I would have acquired it for him, I’m no different.
Just thinking!! Try it sometime haha….

The same people who think Trump really advised people to drink bleach are the same people who think Russia is solely responsible for gas going through the roof and the consumer price index being 8%🙄

  18. Kevin Reider on March 15, 2022 at 4:34 pm

Trump did not suggest putting anything into your viens. Get your facts right. Must be a biden voter. Pathetic

My father was faithful donor of March of Dimes. He instilled in me the spirit of donation-today I help over 10 non for profit organizations that help many as injured veterans and children hospitals. We all need to do our part to make this World better. I am just a drop in a big bucket.

I cannot believe that anyone can live this long in a machine. This seems like the kind of technology that won’t exist until a hundred years from now.

  30. Aracely Lopez on March 15, 2022 at 4:50 pm

One thing I have learned since becoming disabled is that it isn’t our disability that stops most of us from reaching our full potential & making great contributions to society. With today’s technology & resources. The greatest obstacles are indirectly related to our conditions, those resulting from living in a society that doesn’t believe in the potential of people with disabilities & therefore has never established the infrastructure to allow us to live normal lives, let alone reach our full potential.

We live in a world that is simply not designed for us to be included.

Even more frustrating, for those of us willing to forge ahead despite the stigma & lack of accessibility we face in society, the healthcare & mobility resources that would allow us to flourish are simply not financially accessible to most of us.

  31. Bento on March 15, 2022 at 4:50 pm

What an amazing story, he is a fighter.

  32. Mach Fiver on March 15, 2022 at 4:51 pm

Isn’t that an iron lung? I just assumed the technology had been improved upon so those devices weren’t there only option. 70yrs without as much as fresh paint for an upgrade sucks. I know that they provide a patient means with which to manually perform the actions required to breathe when the patient isn’t able to perform breathing on their own but I have never been told just how such a device actually works to achieve this. Being sealed into what looks like a vacuum chamber that possibly uses pressure variations in order to compress the person’s trunk to create an exhale and then after the release of pressure the inhale function is induced, but that’s just my guess. I’d like to know for certain how such machines truly work and would guess that they have be calibrated fairly regularly to work at peak levels. I’m assuming that the eventual diagnosis and need of having one is based on a deteriorating condition over time rather than more immediate onset would result in death before the doctor realized that it was needed in the first place. I hope this answers those questions but if not I’m googling it for sure

  33. Kim Rizzo on March 15, 2022 at 4:52 pm

Um by the way, it wasn’t changed for ease of use; it was changed because many people in the injectible trials got polio or polio symptoms, such as my mother’s elder sister and one of her sons, from the vaccine. This is why live vaccines are attemuated and ones that are still dangerous when attenuated, such as polio vaccines, are given as an oral fluid or nasal spray, where the body can futher deal with the effects in a saffer mannger than with injection. This happened in England. Why would you gloss over that? Vaccine work and polio vaccines proved that they can always be improved for safety but let’s not gloss over it.

I would tell them to kill me. Just let me die. No way I could live like that. Never being able to move, love, have people changing my diapers, feeding, never feeling the sun on my face or breathe fresh air. No trying new foods, seeing the world, never having sex. You just cannot live that way. It’s not life. Just kill me.

  38. dillbill2A on March 15, 2022 at 4:57 pm

I told my fiancé if I ever end up in a situation similar to this, I want to be put out of my misery. Fuck that, that’s not living.

President Trump NEVER suggested injecting disinfectant! The tsitfel socialist movement took what he said and twisted it! It’s called PROPAGANDA! Look up the real definition of propaganda as they are changing definitions of words, such as vaccine now means a aisanahtuE shot! See how that works?

  49. Alex P on March 15, 2022 at 5:08 pm

When a person tells a courageous man like this he cannot achieve his dream, that is the perfect catalyst and drive to prove them wrong!

Words cannot express my admiration for this incredible gentleman. I am certain when his time is "right" he will be greeted with open arms on the other side! God bless him!
