How 6 Million Pounds Of Electronic Waste Gets Recycled A Month | Big Business

Only 17% of electronic waste is recycled. That’s because devices aren’t designed to be recycled. They’re full of tiny, toxic materials that are hard and expensive to break down. But if extracted safely, those materials could mean big money for e-recyclers like Sims Lifecycle Services. We visit Sims’ Tennessee recycling facility to find out why e-waste is getting harder to deal with.

Essentially a hybrid design between sleek and repairable. End of life needs to be factored into design rather then the whole things goes into the bin

Meanwhile, repairing old stuff can prevent a lot of this recycling. Or, simply do not use what you don’t need. I am still using my Lenovo M58 ThinkCentre computer. Despite it being 13 years old, it can still handle YouTube videos played at 1080 resolution @ 60fps, and the same applies to when watching NETFLIX movies. I had originally purchased it as a refurbished computer for about $220, and of course with the free Microsoft OS upgrades, it is now running Windows 10 pro. I did also upgrade the CPU at one point, upgraded from a dual core to a quad core. But since the computer is so old, the compatible quad core CPU only cost $22.00. Plus when the old HDD died, I replaced it with an SSD, and that sped things up even more. Oh, and I converted the old hard drive into being the sturdy base of a homemade lamp. My 8 year old SAMSUNG S23B300B 23 inch computer monitor died just recently, but I repaired it, and the replacement part cost only $1.50. About six months ago, my SAMSUNG LN32C350 32 inch TV, purchased in 2010, died. But to fix that, I simply had to replace one electrolytic capacitor. That component only cost $2.50.

The sad sad thing is the manufacturers don’t want you to re-purpose and re-use the old products that they had originally sold to the public, they want you to throw it out so you buy more new products from them again.

There’s a company a worked for in the UK that did this it was apparently non profit but it was all about the metals huge containers filled with metal and sold to scrap yards was crazy a remember going in everyday and taking pcs apart they had a TV section where they fixed TVs by using other broken TV to are one TV was awesome there was a big problem with drivers stealing stuff tho putting good stuff to the side for themselves

Recycling with individuals sorting items has proved to be inefficient and is a major source of plastic pollution. What is required is a central facility on a township of land with a second adjacent township in reserve about fifty miles away from the nearest habitation to which highway and railway access has been cut.

All manner of waste products should be sent to this facility without sorting and the material ground up and water added in order to turn it into a slurry. Nothing should be placed in landfill.

Separation of different materials in a slurry is a well-established industrial process. Gritty material, metals, fibrous material, rubber, plastics and organics are separated by dropping out of the flow at different times. Tons of gold and other valuable metals might be recovered each year. Fibrous material may be turned into fuel with which to power generators and supply electricity to the plant.

Plastics should be compressed into bricks and stockpiled for the time being to be later turned into items like pavement or cooked under pressure with steam and turned back into petroleum products. For example, plastic might be mixed with sand and gravel and replace concrete sidewalks, turned into shingles, building panels, etc. Research will uncover a variety of ways to turn this material back into useful products.

Imagine how many billion pounds of e-waste ended up somewhere, and only 17% goes to be recycled. It’s only 2021. Tons are coming soon. What would be the future of our children?
