What are the best car mounts are based on where you want to put it. Out of all the car mounts that I’ve used, my personally favourites are the magnetic mounts because of how easy they are to use.

I’ve spent a couple of months of using different car mounts, in different cars and I’ve broken down the areas into following.

1. Driver side window
2. Rear view mirror/ center dash
3. Vents
4. Console
5. Cup Holder

I won’t really focus on a specific brand most of these car mounts because nobody really does anything special (vent mounts are a dime a dozen).

5 – Cup Holders

I didn’t think you could mount your device in a cup holder but I found this GearBeast mount on Amazon. The idea intrigue me so I bought one and immediately regretted it. Out of all the cars I’ve sat in, I could not find a comfortable place to mount my device. On my car, the car mounts get in the way of the gear shifter which is pretty important in the operation of my manual transmission vehicle.

All things considered…WHY?

4 – Console

From my experience, most of the products that suggest mounting it on your console are products that come with integrated magnets. Products like the Nodus Leather case, Nite Ize and Magbaks would fall into this category. My biggest issue with mounting it on your console is that you’re going to cover something up.

The other problem is that mounting it on the console seems to take away from the general design of the console.

Also, removing semi permanent mounts is a pain in the butt.

The only benefit of having it on your console that I can think of is that there is almost no chance that your device is going to overheat on a warm day which may happen with mounting it on the windshield. I’d personally go with a Nite Ize Steelie mount for my console.

3 – Rear view mirror/Central Dash

I see a lot of devices being mounted in this general area and for good reason. It’s out of the way of the console, doesn’t require much effort to check and the screen can be viewed generally by anybody in the vehicle. If you are planning on getting a mount for this location, I would suggest getting one with a longer or extendable arm.

I’m not a big fan of the rear view mirror/central dash setup because it’s a little distracting. I don’t like how there is something in the middle of the windshield that adds to my sight line as I try to avoid pedestrian who don’t look both ways before crossing. It gets worse with the bigger devices.

2 – Vent/CD Mounts

Vent/CD Mounts are the best for people who don’t need to have their devices mounted in their cars all the time. Like the rear view mirror/central dash, I’d go with a magnetic vent mount. And get the one where the mount has a joint to allow you to turn your device towards you. The iFace magnetic mount is one that I’ve been using.

My only issue with these mounts is that you’re blocking an actual vent. This might not be an issue in a place where the weather is mild but I live in a place where snow and cold weather exists for 4-5 months out of a year so heat is very important to me. Losing a vent is a big deal. Also, with vent mounts, you’ll increase the chance that your iPhone is going to overheat.

1 – Driver side windshield

This is my preferred location for my device. It’s out of the way and I can still keep track of directions or monitor potential phone calls.

The only reasons why I wouldn’t keep it here is if the setup would block a vent or if your device is way too big to fit in landscape mode. An iPhone 7 Plus in an iFace mount in Landscape mode is comically too large.

It is a tight spot so using a larger mount like the RAM mount might not work as well.

I found the vent mounts to be cheap junk that couldn’t seem to hold the weight of my phone and constantly pop out of the vents. The best place I have a clip on mount that on my dash in front of my RPM gauge. It doesn’t obstruct my speedometer or my windshield view and I can glance at it easily without taking my eyes off the road for long. It’s clipped on securely, doesn’t get in the way of my vents and I haven’t had any problems with it coming off. Takes two hands to put it in the clip, but that’s no big deal.

I love my cupholder mount. I have a BMW if I have a cup I put it in the rear cupholder. My other car is a vw Passat the neck is adjustable on a different cupholder mount model so it doesn’t block my gear drive. You just need an adjustable mount

I am a realtor and want to do neighbourhood tours so I need to make sure that the camera stays put and also I have an iPhone 11pro max. What do you recommend?

Thanks for the informative and easy to listen to review. When I switched to a Pilot I had to find a different mount. The cigarette lighter type (Soaiy from Amazon) worked best for my iPhone 7+. The gooseneck is decent enough to keep it out of the way of other buttons yet easy to view.

What’s your experience with the iOttie vent mount in regards to how solidly it stays in the vent? I’ve been using a cheap less sturdy mount in the vent in my Mazda 3 (the exact same model and year as yours), and after well under a year’s worth of use, it won’t hold the weight of the phone without tipping downwards, due to it losing grip of the vent.

What’s the best mount for a loopy case?

  14. Jorge Jorhoe on August 16, 2020 at 9:21 pm

Try a small tripod that grips the center thing (console? / cup holder area) between the seats.
Rotate screen doesn’t work on everything (Home screen, iPhone 7) – this can be done manually with the adjustable clamp.
This setup can also give you more than one use for the equipment (in the car) – because it’s a tripod – selfies / How to vids

Great info. One comment – I use a magnetic mount and rather than sticking the metal plate to my phone, I just have it sandwiched between my case and the phone. The magnet can still hold the phone just fine and I don’t have to worry about getting that thing off the phone in the future.

I got a CD mount, i love it. My car has the CD on a high place at the dash, i don’t use CDs EVER and i find it a very good solution kind of integrate the best on a car without a stock mount.

  19. Imi P. on August 16, 2020 at 9:29 pm

why isnt the ottie falling down when you place it on the windshield?

  20. Stephen Sywak on August 16, 2020 at 9:30 pm

I once got a ticket for having my phone mounted in the center of the dash!

    1) It was an "add-on" for the cop, since he was giving me a speeding ticket at the time. I doubt I would have gotten one otherwise.
    2) The base was mounted to the window, rather than the dash

Now I have an iOttie mount, mounted to the dash. I use their intermediate pad. On hot days, while the pad stays, the suction cup tends to peel off from the pad. I have used their standard mount, AND their induction-charging mount. The mechanism works well for both of them, but the induction mount (trying to charge my phone through the OtterBox Defender case) tends to give me an overheat warning on the phone far more often than I actually get a meaningful charge from it. I have no such overheating problem using an inductive fast-charging puck when I’m at home.

    Thank you, Aaron!

Very informative video, thank you, the only thing I take exception to (and be glad Aron, that you don’t live in BC) is the demonstration of the different mounts , cons and advantages while you are driving, you could have done this video in your garage or driveway, would have been safer for you and others plus would have been the responsible thing to do.

Love the review and the pros and cons of devices and positions. I often had to drive rapid response vehicles and found the Quad Lock Car Mount in the driver side of the screen to be most secure and unobtrusive; the downside is it means only being able to use it with a Quad Lock phone case but it works well with my iPhone 6S Plus both in landscape and portrait rotation.

I saw some of these at https://dashphoneholder.com/ , But how do they allow you to have so many holders on your dashboard in your country.

  24. David Peterson on August 16, 2020 at 9:37 pm

I have a fix for the vent mount from the .99cent store. If your vent mount won’t stay in the vent anymore, try using a "nerf dart bullet" cut to fit over the old claws.

  26. Peter Bishop on August 16, 2020 at 9:38 pm

that cupholder phone mount seem pretty useless since it gets in the way and hard to see and need to look down

  27. LifeandKeto on August 16, 2020 at 9:39 pm

Thanks for the video. My daughter got me a suction mount. I’m scared to put on my dash or windscreen. Will it damage either surface when I’m ready to remove it?

If you like to wirelessly charge your phone get a vent mount holster style holder. I find the vents to be the perfect placement.

I like the Nite Ize Steelie Orbital magnetic mount. It mounts nicely to my dash on my 2018 Nissan Frontier right next to the emergency flasher button. I hate the big plastic dash mount or window mount they are so bulky and block my view.

I just got a cell car mount but haven’t decided where to install it. It comes with a suction cup and I’m leaning towards stick it to the windshield. Question…. I live in Texas and the heat is excruciating here where we live; do you guys think the suction cup its going to handle the Texas heat? Todays high was 107° without counting the heat index. Any suggestions please

Thumb up 👍 I tried 6 mounts so far. On the glass, dash, and vent. But im from India and my galaxy s8plus falls down all the time while driving in bad indian roads and i lost few tampered glass covers for my mob. Can u suggest something ? Also, a wireless charger would be a plus point, on long drives.
