I stopped going to frys long before the covid plandemic. Frys customer service always sucked, they were also annoying door receipt nazis. They died because of these problems first, the plandemic just finished the job

When I was last at Fry’s, half the shelves were empty. An employee told me they were switching distributors and things would be back to normal in a month. Later the Fry’s a few blocks from my work closed because the landlord didn’t want to renew with them. They said this had no bearing on how they were doing, they were fine. Then several months later, all stores in the Bay Area closed. “Back to normal soon” and “doing fine”… not so much.

They also lost many lawsuits over the last years too. They treated employees very poorly and broke many employment laws to try to save money.

The last time I went to the Fry’s in Austin in 2019, it was depressing with empty shelves everywhere. I used to drive up from San Antonio to shop and go to other Austin places, but after that last trip, I was done.

I went to Fry’s one time in Sunnyvale. I was looking for a new computer system, I walked around for a while looking and I had to seek out a employee to help me with a question I had about a system I was snubbed (I guess the system I was looking at did not cost enough for their time to help me) then was told the item was out of stock. So I left and never went back it was a bad experience for me over all. This was in mid 2004

While times change and virtually all walk in electronics store like Quest, JDR, Radio Shack, and Fry’s have gone south my personal favorites. Fry’s had problems with tech savy thieves. I mean one of their buyers was actually convicted of creating a straw company. He would buy from his own company at inflated prices & fill the orders with real vendors. The take was on the order of million$. I don’t think this was the only thievery that went on as one day I saw one of their sales associates being led away crying in handcuffs. There were a lot of freelance computer builders & repairmen back in the day. What they would do is buy two motherboards, one fully decked out with cache ram & one w/o. They would take the ram off the decked out MM, transfer it the cheap one, then return the expensive MB for a refund. It worked that way for a lot of stuff: person had a broken sound card, buy the same model at Fry’s & return the broken one for a refund. Fry’s just couldn’t compete on price with this type of shenanigans going on. They stopped stocking discrete semiconductors & parts too. I’ve heard more then a few of our satellites have gone into orbit using parts from places like Radio Shack & Fry’s. Instead of going through the whole purchase order approval process that could take weeks, engineers would just go to Fry’s on their lunch break & pick up the parts they needed. While the engineers were never a huge part of their market, whenever they were asked by friends or family where to buy, the answer was always Fry’s.

I preferred going to Fry’s over using the internet, because it is far easier for me to find what I am looking for when it is all laid out physically. If I have to search online,… I can NEVER find what I am looking for. 1) because I don’t always know exactly WHAT I am looking for, 2) my Google-Fu is NOT strong, I get either a buttload of incorrect results, or am simply searching for the wrong thing and the internet makes no effort to lead me in the right direction.

To find things on the internet… you literally have to know exactly what it is you are looking for, specs and all…

Minute 10:28 Is the one 5 minutes away from home. I remember when they were building it and the Grand Opening as well. During that time I was working for a Solution Provider company based in Plano, TX. I was an IT Trainer. One of the classes I was teaching were about Basic PC’s and A+ Certification and I would take the entire class to Fry’s Electronics. It was funny because I would have a large group of students gathering around me while showing them all the Motherboards, etc. They love it and most of the students ended up building their own PC’s under my supervision at the end of the course. For the past 2 to 3 years I notice how depressing Fry’s Electronics became and when I asked, I was told a lie, saying that they were doing inventory before bringing more stuff in. The first Fry’s I went to was the one in Arlington, TX, where it was obvious it used to be The Incredible Universe. The second Fry’s was the one by my house in Houston, TX where the theme was about oil. The third one was in Dallas, where outside they had mechanical cows. The fourth one was the one in Houston, TX where the theme was all about Space, since they were close to NASA. In that one, my Brother was filming inside and one Employee with an attitude told my Brother to stop filming or get out (That was rude), my Brother told him no problem and as soon as he left, he continued filming everything he could with discretion 🙂

By 2010-2012 I was buying most of my compter stuff from Newegg and Amazon. Whenever I did go in to Fry’s, they could never honor their pricematching on CPU’s and memory because the parts were usually sold out. I also didn’t appreciate the Gestapo security check whenever I exited the store. Their motherboard selection was decent until maybe 2015 when the shelves started to get empty. It was also ridiculous that I had to find an online PDF that had their most recent ads. Their website was horrible and it didn’t seem like they had the infrastructure to sell online which would have saved me a 2 hour drive.

I worked at the Fry’s In Roseville CA for a few years and the writing was on the wall even in 2019, I was surprised they lasted until 2021 and I am sad to see the company go but thankful for the time I was given to work there and meet new people I continue to talk to today.

Its also weird seeing photos of the interior in this video since I hadn’t been there since early 2020 either, and I also do know that they kept the shutdown of the business pretty quiet for people in the company since several people I know who were working at frys till it closed down didnt know that the company was closed until they morning that woke up for work.

  12. sirnonapplicable on October 9, 2021 at 10:08 pm

My old man loved Fry’s, and would take my sister and I there at whenever he was looking for new computer parts. He was absolutely distraught when we drove by recently and saw a fence around the parking lot and a building with no sign over its entrance.

I used to shop the original fry’s store for PC games and parts when I lived in San Jose. Took three buses one way to get there. Although they had a good selection alot of stuff turned out to be repackaged returns which were either damaged or simply didn’t work. Then upon returning to the store couldn’t get a refund only store credit for ..wait for it..more defective products. Plus the store was insane on security apparently according to a news report I read the owners were paranoid about not only customers but employees ripping them.off..while they were ripping everyone else off and yes this was during the 80s 90s

  14. Maikeru Go on October 9, 2021 at 10:14 pm

I have plenty of memories coming here as a kid, teenager, and adult. I remember that the PA location actually had a home theatre demonstration that was done up like a show that you’d find at Disneyland or nearby Great America; complete with scheduled showtimes and an animatronic character. It had an actor in a video shown in a video projected onto a screen a home theatre projector and he’d interact with both the audience and an animatronic pair of lips named "Lips". The general idea was that you’d enter into a room that looked like a livingroom, the lights would dim and you’d be greeted by this professor/inventor and his sidekick "Lips". They’d talk about the benefits of a home theatre system and the components that made up the system. They’d then segue between these bits and clips from movies, sporting events, and T.V. shows and back with the actor looking like he literally just experienced what happened in the clip (eg. acting like he’d just witnessed the P-51 raid in "Empire of The Sun"). The wow factor was two-fold; an experience very much like that from a theme park and a system that provided a solid, theatre-like experience built from consumer-grade, off-the-shelf parts which you could buy (provided you had the money for something so high-end). The presentation was completed by handing out free t-shirts to all audience members; black with marquee-like design and a pair of lips on it—all printed up in blazingly bright neon colors. Though as time went on the showtimes would become fewer and I think that the expense of continuing to upgrade the system with more and more recent components—as well as maintain bespoke parts like the animatronic "Lips"—made it difficult to keep running. When that location remodeled they sadly removed that show and replaced it with a stand-alone room filled with home theatre parts which you could test out via a switching system.

I also remember that in the beginning they’d just sell snacks along the long queue to the registers, but sometime in the late ’90s they remodeled many of their locations and added cafes with drinks and snacks as well as expanding the snack food section to fill much of the area on the way to the registers. Heck, one of the most distinct things about the line leading up to the registers was the fact that while it had some pretty standard fare you could feasibly throw together a last-minute preparation for a date as they did, at one time, offer cut flowers, boxed candy, and basic grooming supplies all in that area—so the average tech geek could hypothetically could stop by after work to pick up some equipment and then get ready for a date/pick up some "I’m sorry I’ve been staying late at the office" gifts. Really it was quite impressive that they had the foresight to realize that folks might need a few everyday necessities and not just electronics/computer parts and appliances.

There’s also the interesting fact that they would have special celebration days (either store anniversary or the celebration of a new store opening) where they’d sell you a freshly grilled hot dog and a Coca-Cola for about a $0.99 (this was a thing that started long before the Costco food court so it was kind of a big deal).

I remember standing there as a kid/teenager staring at the rows of game boxes (kind of like how I stare at Steam/Epic/Gog listings these days—which is probably telling of the decline of the most software retailers) and just marveling. Heck, I remember them being the only store that had the console that I wanted in stock and buying my first console there.

One of the really wacky things was that while there were no longer Fry’s supermarket stores in CA and while this video does mention that they still exist in AZ what isn’t mentioned was that the electronics store didn’t really exist in AZ until sometime in the late ’90s. So there’s that confusing moment for everyone where the people from AZ think that you’re talking about the supermarket, but you’re talking about the electronics store and think that this is what they’re talking about; and both exist in AZ and they have similar-ish logos.

Heck, it was kind of a cool acknowledgement of the store’s cultural impact by having the exterior of the Phoenix, Thunderbird Road location show up in the S2 ending of "Mr. Robot" with a couple of the group’s members dressed in the traditional dress-code for the computer repair folks. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQUp2trnKGg)

Sad thing is that I never made it to see every single unique themed store (they repeated theming in each state, so some AZ locations had the same theme as CA locations). I’ve only been to stores with the CA Goldrush theme, giant computer theme (which became a Sports Basement after the store moved and picked a different theme), science and industry theme, Aztec theme, Egyptian them, and warehouse theme.

  15. Epic Disaster on October 9, 2021 at 10:15 pm

TBH, I was suprized to learn they were still in business this long. I thought they went under when their Houston location closed in the mid 2000s. I always liked the store, the experience especially, but we certainly had some problems with them too. My dad ordered a custom computer from them which was such a trainwreck that he ended up suing them. They also sold us an Xbox controller which was under recall for being defective. Despite that, it’s sad to see this happen. Fry’s was such a unique store.

I worked at Fry’s for years the owners owed so much money to vendors like Samsung LG Asus big companies that’s why they were so bare instead of paying they just closed i met the owner once he’s a billionaire he has an island by the Virgin islands where he hangs out.

I had NO Problem at the Fry’s store in Concord, They gave me Great Customer Service as Infact I was given with a greet Hi, and I ask them where was this part, and they sent me a Tech Rep as he or she help me, and then I would also browse to the DVD collection, get about 3 DVD’s, and then to the Cafe for Lunch, and pay off to the register, and Go Home -As I wait for the bus to take me to the Concord BART Station, and Yes I did Double check in what I got. And then Install my Film Scanner onto my MAC, and PC as I was happy that Fry’s help. I was so Sadden that they are gone, What Next B&H Be Bought out or Sold as they will jack up the prices to the west coast, and it is the wrong item? also Do I really Need a Digital camera with higher Pixel, and become a SHOW OFF ASSHOLE?? Really do I want to be of that such of a person to use Old Tech like scanning my Film in the 50 years that I have been doing in my Photography… But there are Assholes that want to be the next Bring up with the Jones… I missed CompUSA, and Fry’s, and also Virgin’s Megastore, and Borders…What is happening in buying in person from a store? You take your chance online got that and still Amazon has still has NOT SOLVED the Debit Card Security Problem… And I was born in San Francisco in 1956 i do not remember a Fry’s Supermarket in the SF Area, all I remember was Safeway, Bell, and Cala markets.

It’s mind blowing to think the technology that came out of the Frys in Palo Alto, all of those Stanford students that took those parts and changed the world using them. I know that void was filled by NewEgg Amazon and tigerdirect but you’d still see those same students perusing the aisles up to a few years ago.

Spending ten years in Phoenix I can say the whole Fry’s food/ Fry’s Electronics lead to a lot of "which one" when going out to shop. That’s cool they stemmed from he same family. I really didn’t know that. I loved making trips to Fry’s Electronic. Forgot a Sata cable? Yay Trip. Ram stick died? Trip ♪ I was fairly knowledgeable so it was frustrating going sometimes. Employees would often suggest things to me that I knew weren’t compatible. They amount of their own customers I had to help myself was really high. Especially in the mother board section. I’d over hear a lot of interactions between customers and employees there selling processors and mother boards that were not compatible with each other. Anyone who has ever tried to return bad computer parts there (which can happen) can tell you how much of a headache it was to return anything there. I saved a lot of strangers the pain. That said for all it’s headaches I loved the atmosphere of the stores. The theming. The Aztec one in Phoenix and the Tesla themed one (with interactive displays and shows) were my favorite. That Incredible Universe one you showed from AZ was the 100% the dirtiest most unloved store.

My last build was at Fry’s Electronics. I remember a couple years ago I returned and noticed that there was hardly nothing at their stores. I was like WTH is going on? I asked one of the associates and they said something about getting a new supplier. I was like "Okay" And hoped it would be just temporary. Then I got the message saying "FRYS is going out of business." I was like "NO FREAKING WAY!" But alas it was true and now I have to go to AMAZON or New Egg and miss talking to fellow PC Building enthusiasts.

I went to my local Fry’s a little less than a year ago. I had not been following their story, so I was gobsmacked when I went in and found all the shelves bare. I would rather drive over an hour to get to a retailer to buy what I want and get it today, rather than order online, wait a few days for delivery, and then wonder if someone is going to steal it off my stoop before I get home.

  31. EffenD on October 9, 2021 at 10:34 pm

Not to mention that the demand for individual electronic components is no longer there. Never mind that we have a global microchip shortage. But today’s people? If they actually have to lift a finger to do or make something happen, forget it.

As a kid in the Bay Area, Fry’s was great. The first tech store for nerds I was ever in. They opened a half decent store in Concord CA, then after a few years it went downhill. Lack of inventory and helpful staff kept me from spending a few thousand $$$ over the years. However, it was still a great place to get capacitors and other small pieces of equipment tha probably isn’t very profitable

  34. Kyza on October 9, 2021 at 10:37 pm

All of this bullshit. Th eonly reason why it failed is because of the lack of inventories.
Customer services? It has been the same for over a decade at least.
Long distance it’s within acceptable driving distance for what I need to buy.
Online stores? CompUSA, Tigerdirect, Neweggs, etc… They have been there since forever. That’s not the problem.

  35. SuperEman500 on October 9, 2021 at 10:38 pm

This broke my broke my heart when it closed! I litterially would go in their for a cable and spend hours and hundreds of dollars later! It was litterially like Disneyland for us techies! I still prefer shopping at Fry’s grocery store here in Phoenix. I honestly think it is maybe the most popular grocery store in the Phoenix metropolitan area. However Fry’s Electronics was a supermega-tech store! It litterially was the Ikea of tech world! If you are into building tech, this was like a a kid going to mega-candy store! I guess I was lucky because I lived so close to the store

  37. Dennis Taylor on October 9, 2021 at 10:39 pm

What happened? Is that even legitimate question? Frys Electronics was always a corrupt thing from the day it was conceived. Their entire business model was based on selling defective junk merchandise that was packaged to look brand new and then avoid refunding customers when the defective merchandise got returned. That was the essence and core of their business model regarding anything and everything they sold. That business model was very lucrative and worked for a fixed amount of time till enough people got wise to it. When entire pallets of products are being returned en mass in full public view, wise people see the writing on the wall. And if you were someone building and supporting computers for your clients, it doesn’t take very many negative experiences with computer components going bad fast to see the pattern. There is an old saying in business….service your clients and customers or someone else will. This was never the business philosophy or acumen in the Frys Electronics business model. Their one universal mantra was….the customer is always wrong. They candy coated that ugly pig as long as they could to appear like something amazing on the outside but the internal rot that was the core of their business model eventually destroyed them.

  41. CS Ghost Animation on October 9, 2021 at 10:42 pm

It would have been impossible to make this transition, but if they converted their stores into warehouses, closed a large number of stores, and began shipping to locations, I think they could have survived. The pandemic would have netted them a killing because everyone was stuck at home ordering stuff from Amazon and Newegg. Day after day near their death, they would post ads with competitive pricing, yet you had to get them in store. If they delivered, that would have been great. They could even do rainchecks and curbside pickups; this could complete with Amazon because you wouldn’t even have to wait for delivery. Buy it. Show up. They shovel out merchandise. Leave.

This what MemoryExpress did here in Canada. 2-way convenience. Shipping to door & curbside pickup.

The co-signment model could have even worked too, because then they wouldn’t need to stock shelves.

  44. Eric Wolf on October 9, 2021 at 10:47 pm

I never knew that all the locations had different themes. the one in Houston where i’m at was oil rig themed, it was pretty cool and when it opened up it was a hot spot and couldn’t be in a better location off the side of the highway the place was always packed on saturday like a mall… Covid definately wasn’t the reason they died though, the place was barely getting any customers even in 2018. Their demise wsa probably a combinations of things including the examples you listed.
