The ENIAC was capable of about 400 FLOPS. FLOPS stands for floating-point operations per second, which basically tells us how many calculations the computer can do per second. This makes measuring FLOPS a way of calculating computing power.

So, the ENIAC was sitting at 400 FLOPS in 1945, and in the ten years it was operational, it may have performed more calculations than all of humanity had up until that point in time—that was the kind of leap digital computing gave us. From that 400 FLOPS we upgraded to 10,000 FLOPS, and then a million, a billion, a trillion, a quadrillion FLOPS. That’s petascale computing, and that’s the level of today’s most powerful supercomputers.

But what’s coming next is exascale computing. That’s zeroes. 1 quintillion operations per second. Exascale computers will be a thousand times better performing than the petascale machines we have now. Or, to put it another way, if you wanted to do the same number of calculations that an exascale computer can do in ONE second…you’d be doing math for over 31 billion years.

A super computer is a relative thing and what is super in 1945 (ENIAC) is a joke in 2021. The leading super computer of 2021 will be considered a joke in 2076 (the same time forward as backward to the ENIAC).

  27. Tomas Töws on February 7, 2022 at 10:28 pm

You are wrong about the first digital programmable computer. It was NOT the Eniac. It actually was the Z2 built by a German engineer Konrad Zuse who is the inventor of the digital computer.

  29. I Drone on February 7, 2022 at 10:35 pm

Wrong. They are building quantum computers to break EVERY encryption there is-the capability to monitor everyone and anyone in the world in real time: their finances and records, communications, basically every aspect of a person’s life, up to and including listening in and watching your Nest camera system in and around your own house. Do not think that the advent of these machines is merely for benevolent reasons-far from it, ask Snowden.

As for the question if it can mine bitcoin. Of course it can, and it would be great. It’s just that actually no one will get to use it for that. Just figure out how many times more powerful it is than say a 3090 or some popular graphics card. Then that’s how we could quantify how much it could do. I just don’t feel like figuring it out. Maybe someone could. lol
