*The oldest patent I could find was from 1926. But it seems to have been in regular use by then making me think variations are likely much older than that.

*The comment about “specifically the US” is about single phase power… Countries that have three phase power use 3 phase motors which don’t need a kick start. We have both 120 and 240 in the US. The motor in this video is 240

Hello! The comment about "specifically the US" is about single phase power… Some countries (like Germany) have three phase power and don’t require a start winding. We have both 120 and 240 volts in every house in the US. In fact the motor in this video is 240 volts. So what is single phase? I explain that in this video. https://youtu.be/2XYdTogWcIA

I wonder if it’s a Tesla invention from the early days of motor design?

Very common also in speed governors for farm tractor, irrigation pumps, welders, and power units. They have a gradual ‘ramp’ they run against applying variable amounts of throttle, and not just a snap on/snap off operation.

Being a 71yo woman, I confess that I have always been interested in tools and how things work. I lost 2 washing machines and one dryer because that little thingy broke. If I had known about that, and had some sandpaper, I could have probably fixed them. Now I know what to listen for, and can’t be fooled by repairmen saying I need a new whatever. Thank you for the info.

  22. daBobb on August 27, 2020 at 9:38 pm

One thing i will add is that the switch was also open because of adjustment. That external switch needs to be set to close the circuit .

The switch is basically a steam engine/combustion engine governor. That’s why there’s not really an inventor, the design just got adapted.

  26. dharmeshmistry67 on August 27, 2020 at 9:49 pm

This is an extended application of the speed governor used in engine’s. The inventor is James Watt.

I am still wondering how to determine what two wires go to the starting circuit and what two wires go to running circuits in the washing machine motor? Also, How do I determine if a motor has a running capacitor circuit and or starting capacitor circuit. How to determine them by ohm reading which is assumed that there are no circuit diagrams anywhere? Thank you very much in advance.

A 1920’s patent for a centrifugal switch (US Patent #1,630,394) was granted to Royal Lee on May 31, 1927. It was the basis for the formation of the Lee Engineering Company.

According to Google https://patents.google.com/?inventor=Victor+E+Johansen this is the inventor of the switch.

Hahaha, or gal. Hahaha haha yeah right Bro. A woman couldn’t possibly even conceive of such beautifully complex simplicity. Hahaha, my wife thinks fire shoots thru electrical cords, hahaha, Fire!!!! I told her not to worry, it isn’t fire it’s LAVA!!! Hahaha, and she believes me, hahaha haha. You’re too funny Bro. 👍🏼

Looks like the governor on an old steam engine! It’s where the expression balls out comes from! See for yourself on jay Leno’s channel!😁🙌

work on motors brushed induction and this switch is only backward us technology we use other more smart devices very good example of backward technology in us is trucks still no tcs and ecs braking systems max is abs and crash non synchronised gearboxes enjoy but this is very us backward fire creating technology

  41. Richard Wallace on August 27, 2020 at 10:05 pm

Invented by James Watt to regulate the speed of a steam engine and it used 2 opposing balls as the weights to govern the steam engines speed by controlling a valve to the input. A form of negative feed-back. The mechanism was also known as the governors balls.

    Speed

  44. SirBudrick on August 27, 2020 at 10:07 pm

As far as USPTO is concerned, it was patented by Royal Lee of Lee Engineering Company in 1927. It looks similar in concept to some mechanical governors, though this one opens electrical contacts at full speed.

Over the weekend my aged table saw stopped working. Classic "hum and won’t turn". Shaft is free to turn, bearings still feel good. Since I had _just_ watched a bunch of these motor videos I knew it had to be the starting cap or something to do with the centrifugal switch. I ordered a cap just in case (and to use as a known good test in case it _was_ just a blown cap — I tested first as you rightfully advise in this vid!), and when it arrived I dove in. Sure enough, after all those years of switching AC the centrifugal switch had fouled contacts — the cap wasn’t even attached to the motor (or was attached through a giant unintended resistor). Clean up and adjust the gap of the contacts, blow out the spiders and sawdust, check the sealed bearings, and it was good to go.

Personally like the fact that he didnt delete the mistakes. This is important to trouble shooting to allow the trainees / followers what not to do along side with what to do. He also is informative and precise. Subbed and Appreciated.

This is a derivative of the Centrifugal Steam Engine Govenor invented by James Watt to prevent Steam Engines from overspeeding and disentegrating. The mordern one just controls electrons instead of steam but they work the same way: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrifugal_governor#:~:text=James%20Watt%20designed%20his%20first,had%20employed%20for%20steam%20engines.
