A tutorial on insulation testing. I cover the different test methods, an analogy on how insulation testing works, safety and the use of insulation test equipment.

In this video:

* What is insulation testing / what is megger testing / what is PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) testing?
* Electrical safety when working in a DB board / breaker box or around high energy circuits.
* Insulation test types: Proof test, Spot test, Time Resistance testing, Step Level Voltage test, Polarization Index (PI) test, Dielectric Absorption
Ratio (DAR) test.
* Leakage currents: conductive leakage current, capacitive charging leakage current and polarization absorption leakage current in a dielectric.
* Fluke 1587 Insulation Meter

This is a great informative video! Indeed, taking safety is really important when it comes to portable appliances. It can be dangerous if you are not checking your appliances on a periodic basis.
To check your portable appliances, you should the services from http://www.jimstestandtag.co.nz .
They are specialized in checking portable appliances. It will to you minimize the risk

I’m just 15 minutes in and I heard you on two separate occasions call 1M (mega ohm) a "thousand ohms" 1 mega ohm is 1 million ohms. 1 kilo ohm is 1,000 ohms, or am I missing something here completely?

Used a Fluke 1587 VOM/ megger for over 10 years. Great on all scales. Used the 1,000 Volt DC to test hundreds of 480 volt motors.

  20. David on August 27, 2020 at 10:24 pm

Is it that dangerous really? The current in the 1587 is is draw from 4 AA batteries.

  21. Moab's Washpot on August 27, 2020 at 10:24 pm

The Fluke 1587 only tests at 1ma according to specification while dedicated PAT testers, Test at 200ma+ how will this affect the test.

Just in the final part of the video you mention about grounding the conductor to make sure it’s discharged and to not upset the readings. Does you do that before or after the insulation resistance testing ? What I usually do, it’s to touch the cable ends with a piece of insulated wire to discharge them.

@16:15 Not just de-energizing and warning the pple present but if possible lock-out & tag-out.
On site people come & go, people forget andor get distracted and of course accidents happen.
Lock-out can be as simple as a plastic ty-wrap when not in a professional work place app though always best to have something that cannot be removed (metal lock) key kept with the person fiddling with the workequipmentwires.
    Good presentation & info, thanx.

    Ôm lòng đêm
    Nhìn vầng trăng mới về
    Nhớ chân giang hồ
    Ôi phù du
    Từng tuổi xuân đã già
    Một ngày kia đến bờ
    Đời người như gió qua

    Không còn ai
    Đường về ôi quá dài
    Những đêm xa người
    Chén rượu cay
    Một đời tôi uống hoài
    Trả lại từng tin vui
    Cho nhân gian chờ đợi

    Về ngồi trong những ngày
    Nhìn từng hôm nắng ngời
    Nhìn từng khi mưa bay
Có những ai xa đời quay về lại
    Về lại nơi cuối trời
    Làm mây trôi

    Thôi về đi
    Đường trần đâu có gì
    Tóc xanh mấy mùa

Thank you Sir, you’re the best. We were using this device at work on an aircraft testing some stuff.I came here looking for some second opinion type of explanation because I didn’t understand it quite well but you sir gave me everything I needed about Insulation Testers. Now I’m gonna work with it with confidence.MegaLove from 🇿🇦.

Great tutorial.   Especially, appreciate the safety perspective.

  36. Paul Woodcock on August 27, 2020 at 10:46 pm

This is way too complicated for the average person wanting to performing basic PAT Testing. There is too much theory and it would baffle the layman. Insulation Resistance is not dangerous when done with a standard PAT Tester. The subject needs to be accessible and straightforward to conduct with a minimum of training.

  37. Fried Mule on August 27, 2020 at 10:46 pm

I am also not wary happy about high voltage, I have some tricks I use, maybe you find them useful.
When I have done as you demonstrates I do always put a single stranded wire from hot to neutral so if anyone turns on the power it will shorten before any power can reach me.
If I can’t do that, I do often run a long wire from hot to the nearest outlet with earth, again to prevent me getting a schock!
Thanks for your fantastic video by the way:-)

    Hi friend mjlotron
I have MEGGER mit515 with faulty voltage testing. It displays only 7v instead of 250v voltage range. It gives also the same thing with other voltage positions switch. I found already a flat yellow resistor of 100Mohm open. But the same issue. Please help.

can you make a video about Hi pot testing a DUT device under test and why DUT has AC and DC leakage current when disconnecting the earth ground wire?

  45. Jack McDonald on August 27, 2020 at 10:52 pm

Never knew there was leakage in insulation.I just though it was shorted or not shorted.Good stuff.I work on Air Conditioners and always have circuit breakers tripping.I will use a good tool for resistance testing.

On a related topic, good quality industrial multimeters have a nanosiemens conductance testing range, but nowhere on youtube have I seen any demonstration of the usage of this feature. Could you do a video demonstrating the use of multimeter conductance measurement? It seems somewhat similar to megger testing, but with much lower applied voltages.
Also I am going to buy the UNI-T UT-171B (not to be confused with the UT-71B, which is crap), which is a 60000 count meter with data logging, conductance measurement and other premium features for under 300 USD. In spite of the fact that this is a bargain, I can’t find any youtube reviews on it. Do you have any familiarity with this meter (If memory serves me, I think you have a UT-181, but that one is a bit out of my price range!).
